Do Yorkies Mellow Out? My Yorkie is 6 months old and very active and excitable. Our cockapoos were once that way but now at ages 3 and 7, they are very relaxed. Can you tell me: As Yorkies age do that mellow out? Thank you. |
I think they do calm down somewhat with age, but I know at 13 Lacy was still playing and enjoying fetch and still acting like a puppy. |
I would be interested to hear other opinions too. Ella is 1 and a half and has mellowed a bit but I am secretly hoping she will mellow a bit more with age!! lol  :) She has a lot of excess barking energy!:) |
My dogs each have their own personality. My male dog is pretty easy going and laid back also not as outgoing with visitors. My female dogs are both super hyper. The oldest is very friendly with visitors and extremely inquisitive. The younger one is still in the older puppy stage, but tends to be more shy around visitors. She is somewhat of a cross between her mother and her father. But I would say both of the older Yorkies still have pretty much the same behavior as when I got them as pups. |
Do yorkies mellow out? You're hilarious! :lol tears :D Seriously, though...Baby is my first Yorkie (9 m/o), so I can't help you out there. :p |
Hmmmm...that's a tough one! A friend of mine has a Yorkie that's about a year older than my Max. She said the magic age was 2 years...her Toby stopped jumping & yipping at that point, but he still barks like crazy when anyone pulls into the driveway. The jury's still out on my Max...he's a spazz! :) |
Yes, they mellow out. Eddie was a handful the first year, and I made the same exact post you did. But he slowly mellowed out. Now, he cuddles more than I'd like. Nowadays, I have to force him to play. |
Emilee is my extrememly hyper one. She will be 3 in December and I sure hope she mellows out soon although I'm not going to hold my breath. |
Mellow out? I sure hope not. I need the exercise! |
ummmmmmmmm I have had 6 yorkies over the years. NO:eek: Sorry.... |
I was going to say no, too. :D Muffin didn't. She could run like the wind at 14! :D |

yes they mellow out, when they are exhausted.... so get them tired |
Joey is much more mellow at a year than he used to be. That said, though, he's a long way from being what you'd call a mellow dog. |
Millie is over a year old and I would have to say she has mellowed out, alittle. Or maybe she has matured. But she definitely is out of the puppy stage, I can tell. As each month goes on, I find that she is more mellow than she used to be. I truely am enjoying Millie more than ever right now. I noticed that she behaves more, she is more patient, in that she will wait longer periods of time, etc. So in that respect she is more mellow or as stated, more mature acting. She still likes to play and run, but the urgency is leaving her. |

Yes I would say they do to an extent. Baby will be 3 years in August. She slowed down a bit about the last year or so. She still rules the roost here and is in every ones face, but not as often. There are still times when she can be demanding though. |
Cali really started to calm down at 11 months at first I thought maybe she was sick but she just has mellowed. I love it. She still plays a bit but likes to sit by me and chew on a chew stick or lay by Maya. One thing we did is we set up my bedroom window area with an area that she can climb on to and lay around or she can look out 2 windows. She spends hours looking out at the bunnies and squirrels and neighbors. She hardly wants to play with her toys anymore. I found with most of my dogs by 18 months they really seem to settle down. |
I have to admit, Kizzy is almost 6 months and she is mellow during the day with just she and I. But when hubby gets home for a while she is just a handful. She is all over him and once he gets ready to watch tv there she goes right up in his lap. even made him spill his coffee once and his tea once. she just leaps without warning. And there she will stay till their both fast asleep unless he makes her get down while he reads the paper, then most times she just jumps right back up there. but he likes it once she gets settled in beside him or in his lap and leaves his news paper alone. lol |
I think it depends on the individual dog's personality. Our late yorkie Sparky, was a lap dog, she loved to sit on my husband lap. We also had a yorkiepoo at the same time and she wdas pretty mellow too. However we live on an acreage and they both would stay outside for long periods of time. So we never noticed the hyperactivity, they did it outside. |
:D I was glad to see this post. I was wondering the same thing. Oliver is 1 1/2, and has sooooo much energy. He's always ready to run, play, chase, you name it. :woof: |
