Are yorkshire Terriers Classified as being Hypoallergenic dogs I am looking for any type of information on yorkshire terriers being classified as being hypoallergenic dogs. We have two 9 year old yorkies Shamus 3.5 lbs and Kateri 2 lbs both are loving dogs and my grandaughter loves them both. My problem is that my daughter is going through a divorse and her soon to be ex husband is creating issues between our dogs and the safety and welfare of our granddaughter who has asthma. Four generations of my wifes family has asthma and have allergies to certain types of dogs/cats etc. (grand daughter, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother) but none of them are allergic to shamus or kateri. I'm looking for some type of documentation on this subject for court. |
I have the same problem with allergies, my yorkie and now yorkie-poo has caused no issues for me. Have you checked on the AKC site, I know I have read it somewhere. Either that or check on Yorkie rescue websites. I hope this atleast leads you in the right direction. |
Yes....their hair is like human hair....the only time they shed per say is when you brush them just like your hair......My stepson has asthma bad and he is fine here. Poodles are the same as the Yorkie in reference to not bothering asthma....I will look around and see if I can find the website where I found the info at and send it to you....My husband's ex is a real piece of work so i know how it is with the divorce thing.....I keep a clean house and she doesn't and he comes to our house everyweekend sick from living with her...it takes me all weekend to get him back to normal then back to her house.....she just got a new cocker spanial and I can't wait till summer to get him out of that house for extended periods of time....poor guy........I will send the web info as soon as I find it. |
From what I've read and heard its dander that causes the allergies. Pollen ect, can stick to the hair and when the child plays with the dog they will start sneezing from the pollen on the coat.. I think it really depends on what causes the asthma in your child.. My son gets asthma from feather pillows and moldy stuff. If I run across any documentation I'll be sure to pass it on.. I hope it works out well for all. |
my son has very bad asthma and we had to give away our American cocker spaniel because of this, i bought a yorkie firstly because ive always wanted one, but secondly because i had read that they were great for people with asthma... my yorkie Ted, is the first dog my son has been able to cuddle and love without setting off his asthma.. so far so good and weve had the dog about 3 months now. |
That's BS.! That's a lod of BS.! I have both Allergies/Asthma and 2 Yorkies, a full grown one and a puppy. Their hair has nothing to do with my Respitory problems! It's a well known/published fact!!! :D He is just fishing for another way to hurt your Family and the situation, pets get caught up in Divorces too, in a round about way? As well as children. It's always a bitter/sticky situation. |
Romeo........ Here is some info and links.......you can make the case that if he has dust in his house then it's not suitable for them either. :) The fourth type of coat is the soft, silky or curly, non-shedding coats. These coats continue to grow longer and longer, with a very extended growing life. All dogs (just like humans) actually shed to some degree, but this type of coat has such an extended growing life, without seasonal growth variances, that they are considered non-shedding. Examples of the silky non-shedding coats would be the shih tzu, maltese, and yorkshire terrier coats. Examples of the curly non-shedding coats would be the poodle and the bichon frise coats. Incidentally, if you do not spay your female dog, she will shed about 6 weeks after coming in season. Reason enough to spay! And lastly, let's look at how we can help manage the allergies - It will certainly make a difference in your success in dealing with your child's (or spouse's or your own) dog allergies if you choose the proper type of dog. But it doesn't stop there. You can do so much more. People with allergies (and dogs with allergies) are not allergic to one thing. Typically, the person allergic to dogs is also allergic to cats, pollens, dust, dust mites, molds, etc. That person's body has decided that all these things are foreign. Counter to what you've read above in preventing the allergies, once someone has developed these allergies, we need to try to keep the home as a sanctuary where he/she can get away from ALL allergens, giving his immune system a daily break. http://www.mixedbreedpups.com/allerg...m#coat%20types Has a lovely flowing coat that doesn't shed (one of the best breeds for allergy sufferers) http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/rev...eterriers.html |
One particularly good attribute of the Yorkie is that the hair is non-allergenic to humans and therefore a great companion for people with asthma, etc. http://www.ozpets.com.au/dogs/review...eterrier.shtml I suffer from an allergy to most dogs, but would love to have one in my life. Can you tell me what breeds are most suitable for allergy sufferers? In general, the non-moulting terrier types tend to cause less of a problem to people with allergies and asthma. You may also find that a crossbreed containing one or more of these breeds may also be suitable. For example: Bedlington Terrier Bichon Frise Cairn Terrier Lakeland Terrier Miniature and Giant Schnauzer Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodle Sealyham Terrier Welsh Terrier Airedale Terrier Australian Silky Terrier Yorkshire Terrier Irish Terrier Kerry Blue Terrier http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/main.asp?structureid=626 |
I have had asthma most of my life and that was one of the reasons my parents had Yorkies - I have never, ever had a problem with it around them. My son is also asthmatic and he has no problems with it around or because of my dogs. Good luck - the information Ringo has posted is GREAT! :) |
I read that they are not hypoallergenic, but because they have the single layer of hair, most people consider them to be. I think your ex will not be able to use that against you. |
