Can a dog tell a difference between one room from another in a house? Can dogs tell the difference between rooms in a house? For example, can a dog tell between a bathroom and a living room? So if you taught your dogs that it is okay to "go" in the bathroom...would that hold over to another house? Suzie |
Well, I'm not sure, but I think so. With my little poodle, we would put pee pads down in the bathroom and when we would visit friends, we would take her crate and put the pads in the bathroom we were using. We showed her where it was of course, but she always seemed to find it. (I followed her like glue, tho, because we would be in a friend or relative's home, and I didn't want any accidents. Abbey will probably be going with us to visit friends in a month or so, so I will see if it works for her or not. (It was 20+ years ago that I had a yorkie pup, so can't recall with her.) Ellie |
In my experience, being potty trained in one house does not automatically mean they're potty trained in another.... Pixie is about 99% trained in my house, but if we go to a friend's house, she goes wherever she pleases and doesn't give a second thought to it! Teaching your dog a command to "Go Potty" or something similar will help. That way if you're not at home you can put him where you want him to go and tell him to go there... I never taught Pixie a potty command and am regretting it. I think I'll start trying to though, it would be nice for when we're visiting. |
I think my dogs can tell the difference because they always go in our office and poop and they do that in no other room. |
My friend has her 7-9 (can't remember) yorkies trained to go do their business in the family bathroom. She has pee pads in there. Ever so often, they go in other areas of the house but for the most part they go to the pee pads. |
Brownie has her pee pads in my bathroom and goes there and the only times she has missed is when we moved house. When we go to grandma's she missed the first time, then never missed after that. |
I'm not sure about knowing rooms but they do know where to go. I have mine pee pad trained an no matter where I go as long as I have a pee pad out he will go on the pee pad. He will also go on grass on usually only grass when he goes outdoors. |
I believe that each room is considered fair game until they are taught otherwise. Some might get the idea rather quickly and make the connection, but I would not automatically assume that just because they are trained in one room, or one house, that they are trained in all. I have living proof. Mine are real good in the kitchen, but I watch them like a hawk in the living room. I believe that once I catch them making a misake, and correct them that they will eventually make the connection, but I want proof before I trust them. |
