Being a worry wort! Does anyone have a two story family room or foyer with an overlook? I just moved into a new home & have one of these. Fortunately, my baby hasn't learned to climb the stairs (and I'm hoping he won't) but he would be able to fit right throught the rails if he tried. I know I could block them, but my fiance would have a fit if I did this. When do these dogs develope recognition of height? Does anyone else have a similiar concern? |
I dont have a landing but my banaster to my steps are open and my dogs have never tried to go thrugh there. |
What about gates? Just block the areas w/ rails off, if it's possible. Also dont let him walk up the stairs...just carry him everytime, never encourage him too because then he'll learn. My dog picked that up in no time, but I wanted him too. In our new house we have a loft that overlooks the living room, but were getting a halfwall instead of rails put up. In our house right now though, theres rails and if he's upstairs and one of us are downstairs he will peek his head through. It scares the s**t out of me, so I just call him and distract him. I'm too afraid to go get him because what if he jumps through. In our new house our balcony will have rails though that he can fit through, so I'm going to get some kind of net to put around it. It's gonna look kinda dumb, but I dont care, besides its just in the backyard. |

We have a two story family room with a railing overlook, and we put clear plexi-glass panels across the railing upstairs, so our yorkies cannot slip through. The openings in stair railings can be very dangerous. I would never take the chance. :aimeeyork |
Thanks for the ideas! So far, Snickers hasn't tried to go up the stairs & I always carry him up. If I go up without him then I give the sit & stay command. Hopefully this will continue to work. I never thought of netting, maybe this would work. The rails are rod iron & they round out, so I don't think that plexi glass would work. But netting & plants will work & probably look good too. I have thought of having gates made in the same rod iron design to block both sets of stairs, but that will cost a lot of money & I'd have to save for awhile to do this. My fiance is a builder & sometimes we show our own houses.....that's why he's so picky. He's also not a pet person, at all! It took me four years to convince him to let me get a dog. Not that I take orders, I just believe that getting a dog is much like deciding on having a baby & on this issue both partners have to agree. He has since fallen in love with Snickers (although he won't admitt it)......but I've caught him snuggling up with him:) I am very careful to clean up accidents before he can discover them though!! |
Those decorative glass blocks would not look too bad and you wouldn't have to build them that high. |
