Should I or shouldn't I!!! I have to decide soon. My husband & son are taking a road trip from Louisiana to Wisconsin. If my daughter & I go...Do we take Riley (4 months old)? How difficult is it to drive 17 hours with a puppy? Is it difficult to find pet friendly hotels? We usually just drive until we get tried, so we never know exactly where our overnight stop will be. BP (Before Puppy) when we'd go on vacation, I'd have a friend come by once a day to feed our cat & birds. We'd be gone a week. And, I'll admit it, I'm terribly attached to Riley. She's like my baby. I left her for 5 days last month but she was home with my husband & son. So, do my daughter, Riley & I go on the trip. Or do we pass? |
Take her I would take her. Mya was just curious at the foot path under the hotel doors. We did check to make sure they were pet friendly but honestly I don't think they would of noticed that she was there. She is not a barker. We did take her cage with a lock on it for when we ate in the hotel restaurant. Not that I did not trust the maid. I just worried that she would open the door because Mya is so cute. We let her run around a lot when we stopped for gas or food. We took her to a Boston Pizza and put her bag on the seat.The waitresses wanted to see her. We have taken her other restaurants and just put her in her travel bag under the table. We have not been kicked out of place yet. I took her in to the truck stops out of her travel bag and everyone seemed really happy to see her. It was hard to leave with everyone wanting to see her. After a road trip Mya is a little more clingy because she used to being with us on our lap being cuddled so much. Enjoy your trip !! |
I think people should take their pups with them whenever they can - and make other arrangements when they can't. I hate to see people not go on trips and vacations because they have pets. I think this is a sacrifice that we really don't need to make most of the time. Go on your trip - take your pup - and have fun. PS: My dogs don't ride in the car a lot - but always want to go - then they start acting up a little - but if we continue on with our drive, they soon settle down and begin taking long naps. And, of course, they love it when we stop and they can get out and walk and go to the bathroom, etc. Have fun! Carol Jean |
We just came back from a trip to Florida with Mia and had no problems. Even though we usually drive straight through, which is like 20 hours, we made it a 2 day trip and stayed at a hotel on the way. Mia slept when we were driving, which scared me at first because that's a lot of sleeping! But she was fine. We walked her whenever we stopped. There were a lot of pet friendly hotels on the way. In Florida we left Mia in her x pen and put do not disturb sign on the door when we left the room. I also left my cell phone number at the front desk in case anything went wrong. The hotel was okay with it and they did not call. I would say go for it. :) |
We're not taking Katia anywhere when she was 4 months. Me personally wouldn't take a vacation with her now at 15 months. That is why Pete & Mac's was invented. That's just my wife and I though, we refuse to have a vacation ruined by dog. |
I think how easy/hard the road trip will be depends on your pup. Trixie has been a great traveler, she's been on lots of long road trips (and one long plane trip overseas). I just make sure we have lots of potty breaks (every two hours or so), have fresh water available (or give it to her by syringe), food and nutrical in case she doesn't want to eat. You'll be surprised how easy it is to find a hotel that allows pets. Just go to www.petfriendly.com and alsmost every city has a few. Mostly largers chains like Holiday Inn, Super8 etc. If I were you, I'd take her. |
I would take her, other wise you will just miss her to death. Motel 6 does not charge at all for dogs. |
We just got back from a family reunion that required a 24 hour drive and the dogs did great. I took my chihuahua and yorkie (5 months) with us and we drove 12 hours a day and then stopped at a hotel. Both of them mostly slept while we were driving. Everytime we stopped for a break I let them out for a walk. I was amazed at how well they both traveled and I know they don't mind their carseats because after we returned home, I brought the carseats in to the house to wash them and when the dogs were ready to sleep, they hopped back in their carseats. It was a little more work to have them with me but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. |
We did a long road trip with Jaxon and he was pretty good (ended up being almost 10 hours on the way, and 13 hours on the way back). I had a flossie for him to chew on and that kept him busy for awhile. He slept a lot too and we just made stops along the way so he could get out. we started traveling with romeo when he was 4 months old. we travel alot so i wanted him to get used to it. plus, i didn't trust anyone to leave him behind.he travels well. try petswelcome.com for hotels & tips. use a carseat. we got into a terrible high speed accident on i-95 on the way home from florida and it saved his life. happy traveling!;) |
A big thanks for everyone's input! From day one I've put Riley in her bag & taken her on drives. To the pet store, the bank, even to work. She does really well. So....I decided. My daughter, Riley & I are going to Atlanta to visit my brother. This is a 8 hour trip. So the guys are going North & the girls are going East. I'm sure Riley will do fine. We'll stop & let her walk every few hours. & my brother's fine with us bringing her along. Now I'm excited about this trip. |
I think that you should take him. I loved taking Georgie on trips eventhough he is a pain in the car sometimes. Just stop ever couple of hours stretch and let Riley go potty. As for dog friendly hotels you can go to letsgopets.com and put in the city where you are staying. Good luck and we would love to see pics of the trip:D |
Oh Goody!! You're coming to Atlanta I don't know where your brother lives but if you are anywhere close to Alpharetta please stop by my house. If you would like to meet up for a playdate or if you need a babysitter for Riley, just let me know. My little Dylan absolutely adores other dogs. I know visits with family can sometimes be hectic so don't feel like you have to but, I would just love to meet another YTalker. PM me if you would like my phone number. |
