Removing Tear Stains... I have a Yorkie whose eyes tend to tear a lot. Does anyone have any advice on removing the tear stains or how to keep that area clean? I've tried tear pads from PetSmart but those don't seem to work. Thank You :doghouse: |
I wish I knew the answer to this, my little Minoot gets such bad build up. I usually just try using a wet wash cloth to try and wipe away, but I'm never able to get it all. The groomer has to cut that build-up off when I bring him in. |
My vet uses one of those little curved flea combs for combing that area - and she just goes zip zip - and she's done - other than washing off with a damp cloth. Good luck! Carol Jean |
I use Eye Envy and it really does work - you have to keep it in the fridge but it's gentle and within 2 days the tear stains on the face were gone. I tried the Pet Smart pads and returned them - I didn't like them at all. |
i use a small flea comb and washrag. |
Excessive tearing is caused by clogged or malformed tear ducts in the eyes. You should take Sadie to a vet and get her tear ducts checked out. It could be a simple procedure as flushing the ducts or if the ducts are malformed or were never formed, a simple operation to open these up. Chicken Soup for the Dog brand dog food was recommended to my mom's maltese because she had horrible tear stains. Have you considered switching Sadie's food? |
Thanks to all that responded. Sadie has a vet appt on Firday so I'll ask him to check the eye ducts. Hopefully it'll be as simple as finding a solution that works for her (Eye Envy) or switching her dog food. Thanks again for you input. I really appreciate it. I'm a new memeber and its my first post on YT....and it feels so nice to know I can ask other Yorkie owners for their advice. :animal-sm |
My Mazie has reaaaaally runny eyes. The vet checked it out when she was spayed, sd. there was nothing he could do, and she would "grow out of it". ??? Even when I give her a bath, I SCRUB and can't seem to get the "tracks" off. I do comb through it every day, but not with a flea comb....I need to get one. Welcome to YT! I'm a newbie here too, really! |
My breeder said that she uses a saline to remove tear stain. Said it was the boric acid in that is same stuff thats in the things you can buy to remove it. She took a cotton ball and squirted some on and wiped. When she showed me I was like acid won't that burn? She said she uses in her own eyes every day for her contacts lenses and it don't burn her it won't burn an animals eye. I'm learning alot about all kind of yorkie stuff lately. I'm waiting on my new puppy that will come home soon and I am trying to learn all I can. Michelle |
This is what I do. Believe me Im not groomer:) ..........I cut the hair directly under the tear duct down the sides of the nose and all the way around the eye very short with mustache scissors. You wouldnt beleive how much it helps. If there is some drainage, well it wipes clean much easier with shorter hair. And there is alot less build up. Yorkies are sure prone to eye irritations. If the drainage is excessive your yorkie may have an eye infection. If you note green or yellow drainage it isnt normal. See your vet for possible treatment. |
I also use saline. First thing in the morning and at bedtime before Mocha sleeps, I wipe his eyes and get the eye boogers out (sorry, don't know what else to call it). I have a Chris Christiansen fine comb (similar to a flea comb) to comb the hair that is directly underneath the eyes. This seems to help with the gunk from accumulating. I also used to have my groomer cut the hair at the corner of Mocha's eyes. But I've stopped doing it and let it grow out. That has seemed to help stop the tearing. He doesn't seem to have any tear stains at all. |
contact solution will remove tear stains, I used this on my maltese, it works and you dont need to worry about getting it in their eyes. |
Adrianna is a lil over 6 months old and is teething (ok, she's chewing everything in sight!!!). I was reading in another thread that this might increase her tearing. Is this true? Is there hope for when she's done teething that her tear stains will clear up....or will I be cleaning them forever?    |

A few things that cause tear staining are: diet- putting them on a good diet, such as Chicken Soup for example and giving them distilled water helps them and will clear up the tear staining if it is caused from poor diet genetics overactive tearducts teething or illness ingrown hairs by the eyes dust and pollen that gets into the eyes Scampers has absolutely no tear staining or watering eyes, they are perfect!!:D On the other hand, Poptart, my maltese, has really bad tear staining. For him I wash his face everyday and put corn starch under his eyes, being careful not to get it in his eyes, and brush away the excess corn starch, it also helps the area from getting wet. I have also tried using Polident and it works really good at getting rid of the tear stains and I know alot of people who have maltese use this and it really works. You just put the tablet in the water and let it dissolve and then take a washcloth and dip it into the polident and wipe it under the eyes, be careful not to get it in the eyes. Let it sit for a little bit and then wipe it off with a wet washcloth. I have tried numberous things and these are the two that work the best for me. |

My vet said to give Cooper distilled water instead of Tap water and it has helped alot |
Oh, the eye booger problem. Pippa has them bad, Scout-hardly at all. I clean Pippa's eyes every day with contact solution and a cotton ball and use eye envy once a week after baths. I never thought about asking the vet if there could be something going on that could be treated..but I will next time we go! |
Thanks guys for all the info! Little Roxy has been getting tear stains for a little while now and I think it might be linked to her teething. She is teething so much at the moment that both her ears have fallen again too. Guess I'll just have to keep cleaning her daily and wait for the teeth to come in before hopefully gettting an improvement. |
Anglels eyes I got this stuff for my maltese called angles'eyes and I tell you it works great on yorkies and maltese the site is www.angelsysonline.com My chewy had really bad messy eyes and its all gone now, just a little bit yellow there. I have one yorkies that gets it and hers is all gone too. Lynda |
Thank you for posting about using contact solution. I have been dealing with tear stains for months now and was not able to get them out. I just used the solution a few minutes ago and I could not believe all the gunk that came off on the wash towel. Thanks! |
Eye Envy is very expensive and not worth the price. I know gals who tried it and it didn't work. The little round jar has a very thick bottom to it, so has only half the amount of powder as it looks. Rip off. I've heard angel's eyes work, but I haven't see the results yet. The contact lens solution may be worth a try before buying any expensive product that may not work. |
My little boy's eyes would run like crazy. First thing in the morning his eyes were fine but the more he ran, the more his eyes ran. I took him to the vet and she put dye in his eyes (it was on a little piece of cardboard), then darkened the room and used an ultraviolet light. What was supposed to happen is we were supposed to see a little wet around his nose glow. We did not. The vet thinks his tear ducts are either blocked or just not there. According to her, it is OK, instead of the moisture from his eyes running through the tear ducts and then out his nose, it runs down his face. Now I took him to the vet with this when he was about 3 months old. He is now 8 months old and has very little drainage. I just use a warm face cloth to wipe his eyes. It is a pain because he hates it so it is a fight everyday. I live in a very small town (1,200 people) so my chances of a second or third vet opinion is not an option. If this does not sound right (that he can live with this with NO problem), PLEASE let me know. |
