500 posts and a spay question. Hey everyone, I made it past 500 posts. Wow I can't believe it. :) I wanted to ask: Izzie is my little 2 lbs 9 ozs chocolate Yorkie. I have been waiting until she is at least 6 months old (will be on Aug. 1) to get her rabie shot. I want to discuss with him getting her spayed. He uses the isoflurine gas and I will definitely have the pre-op blood work done, but is she old enough and big enough to be spayed. I am really afraid of having it done, but know it's the best thing for her. I don't think she will get a whole lot bigger, so please tell me you thoughts on her age and size for this surgery. Thanks in advance. |
Congratulations on making the 500 club!! As far as getting spayed, since most of these little girls don't have a first cycle till a year old or after, if I had it to do all over again, I would wait later. Sissy was 7 months old and 3 1/2 lbs when spayed. If I knew I could have waited for several more months and then take care of any leftover baby teeth, or tatooing I could have done that all at once. Just a thought. |
I wouldn't be concerned about being too small to get spayed. My vet explained to me that before surgery, they weigh your dog and then plug their weight into the anesthesia machine and the machine administers the appropriate amount of anesthesia. And, there will be a vet tech there watching the machine, so there really isn't too much of a risk as far as anesthesia is concerned. My vet told me that weight didn't matter much. BUT, if you want to wait to get baby teeth pulled, then maybe you could wait until later. But, it is always such as guessing game as to when they will start their first heat. I would hate for you to wait and then her go into heat. So, I dunno. |
Mitsou is 3 pounds and she went under 3 times without problems . First she was spayed , second :knee surgery and third :for her heart . |

Is it really better to have it done before the first heat, or does it really matter. I'm not worried about her getting pregnant, I will make sure that doesn't happen. From what I've researched, it has mostly been a tie. Half said it should be done before the first heat the other half said it didn't really matter. I just want to do what is better for Izzie. Her mother didn't have her first heat until she was 17 months old and she weighed before her litter 5 lbs 14 ozs. and now she is a constant 6 lbs 2 ozs. |
