doggie stairs :( 1 Attachment(s) I bought Straszny some doggie stairs from bed bath and beyond (you know, those "seen on tv doggie stairs"), and he goes up them fine, but down is another story. He won't. He isn't a tiny guy either. He is about 7and a half pounds. But it IS kind of a scary angle for him. There are only 3 stairs, and it is just not high enough for him. I can't decide if I should keep them to at least help him get up onto the bed (he sleeps there when I am at work, i have tile flooring in my apartment), or if I should just take them back. What do you guys suggest? And what do you use to help your babies get up? Here is a pic of similar stairs. Ours also have only 3 steps. You can order a fourth one to add on, but I don't know if I should...he will probably still refuse to go down... |

If the steps help him get in your bed while you are away, I would keep them. I bet one day soon he'll learn to go down them. You could try placing his favorite treat on the floor or on the bottom step and coax him to come down them. Also, does he like to go "bye bye" or go on a "walk" or anything like that? You could make him walk up the stairs to get on the couch and tell him he's going "bye bye" or on a "walk" or getting a "treat." See if he'll go down them then! Or you can sit at the bottom of the stairs and call him and really praise him if he actually does walk down them. I think the stairs are a good investment and I think with a little work that he will eventually learn to go down them. |
When Sean first came to us (almost 7 years old), he didn't know how to go up/down stairs. We taught him. He just had to have a "reason" to use them. We just kept encouraging and praising him whenever he managed to do it. Going up was much easier than down. He actually runs up the steps now. :animal37 He also couldn't get up on the bed. Instead of buying the steps, my husband made some. He took boxes (different sizes so he could make them like steps) and covered them with pieces of carpet. Sean went up them for about 2 days and then didn't use them. He figured out how to jump off the bed. Even now he makes a few attempts, at times, to get up on the bed. We keep a rug at the bottom of the bed so he has good traction for getting up/down. |
We built a ramp for Mitzi to get up and down the bed. It works really good for her but needs more room than steps. For the couch we have a kind of foot stool and she gets up and down very easily. :aimeeyork |
I put a living room ottoman at the foot of my bed, Tootie was able to use it when he was very small. With such a large "landing pad", it makes it easy for all of my pups to get up and down.. he even uses the ottoman sometimes for a nap, or chewing snacks.... it works out very well and is quite handy as a stoll at the foot of the bed.... d |
Pet ramp better? I almost ordered the delux stairs from Target, I think they had 5 or 6 stairs but when I measured, I found they still were not high enough for a little one to get up onto my bed. I'm thinking about buying one of those pet ramps. What do you all think? |
I put a cute little doggie blanket on the top steps so it's not a very far jump for him. |
1 Attachment(s) When we first got Cali we ordered stairs for by the bed but when they came they were so steep and the stairs were too narrow Cali could go up but coming down she looked likes she her but was going to come over her head. So we used these stairs my husband made(see pic) for my last Yorkie that were wide and not steep. Well we just ordered a scamp ramp to replace the stairs by the bed to prevent any injury to her legs and it's great. It has a washable cover on it and it's made of foam so it's easy to move. |
Oh yeah!! I bought those As Seen On Tv Doggy Steps. My babies love it! Now they don't have to look at me whining, in order to come rule my bed when i'm watching tv! I taught them how to use it by putting treats on different steps, until they learned how to go up and down without nervousness.:) |

I have the same steps for my bed. Sprout had no problem up or down the stairs. Polly whould go up but not down, she would bark for me to come and get he off. When I would come and get her I would walk her down the stairs. I thought she would never go down, but one day she did and hasn't stopped using them. I would give him a little time and he will get the hang of coming down. |
My dad built steps for Max and Abbie to get on and off the bed. They both were afraid to use them to get off the bed at first but eventually they learned to use them. We practiced and I praised them a lot so they use them all of the time now. Give him some time--maybe he'll get used to them. Or maybe try using a ramp--it might not seem as steep as the stairs. |
