Guilt, guilt, guilt So glad I found this forum today! My name is Samantha and I am the mother of 2 little ones (a boy who is 5 and a girl who is 2) and a little Yorkie named Maxwell. We just got our dog 2 weeks ago. My husband and I both wanted to raise our children with a dog. It didn't take us long to decide on a Yorkie. Here's my big concern: I am not so sure now that a dog is for us. I am feeling a lot of anguish about leaving him home alone. Is this normal? I haven't left the house in 2 weeks and circumstances in our household are looking like I may need to return to work when my oldest goes to Kindergarten in the fall. That would mean that Max would be home alone ALL day. Next week the kids and I are supposed to go to visit the in-laws for the morning. It's about an hour drive and we will be away for about 5 hours. Max has an expen set up in our house so he should be fine. What will he do when I gone? Do you think he will be okay by himself? What about if I return to work? |
HI and welcome to YT. you will find lots of great info and advise here. I think your little maxwell will be just fine. Lots of people on here work all day and have yorkies. I'll be getting my yorkie next weekend and she'll be staying alone while i'm at work. i'm going to go home during lunch but she'll be by herself for 4-5 hours at a clip. they adjust. lots of dogs stay home with the people work. |
Hello and welcome!! I have a yorkie who just turned 8 months, and I go to work and school, so he stays alone a few days a week for about 8-9 hours. He has free roam of my room and the kitchen, and when I leave, I just make sure he's got food and water out, and that he's got lots of toys to play with. Dogs sleep a lot during the day, so your little yorkie might end up playing and sleeping a lot! I had SO MUCH anxiety about leaving him all alone - I honestly didnt' think about anything but him for the first couple of times I left him alone. But honestly, he's done fine and I get greeted with LOTS of kisses when I get home! See how he does when you go to your in-laws for a few hours, and between then and the time that your youngest goes to kindergarten, I would run a few errands here and there and get him used to being alone for a few hours at a time. I hope this helps! Good luck! |
Just wanted to welcome you to YT. I am sure you will get lots of great advice from folks how have "been there done that" :) |
look into finding a doggy day care or even a puppy sitter. you're local vet should know about one. |
Mine is home alone for 8-9 hours while I work. Sometimes Sam brings her yorkie boy in the morning so they can play all day while we're at work, but otherwise she's alone. She's ok because I've monitored her while gone and she just sleeps, eats, and drinks. When I get home she gets loads of attention. Why can't you take your pup with you on your trip? You can set up the pen there, so he can't roam around the whole house but at least he would be with you. |
I have no advice since I dont work and leave Kizzy alone, just wanted to say hello to you and welcome to yt. |
Yorkies adjust to your lifestyle. When I first got my yorkie I was home for almost a month and then went back to work. If you decide to go back to work try leaving him alone for longer and longer amounts of time every day to build up his tolerance. My little guy doesn't seem to mind being alone. Actually, there was a DRASTIC improvement in his training/behavior once he had a little alone time. I guess it's because he wasn't so spoiled! Good luck. |
Welcome!!!! We are glad to have you. My Lexie is home alone during the day when I work. I do come home for lunch so she is alone for 4-5 hr stretches 2x a day. She does great! I have a large playpen for her that has her bed, litter box, water bowl and toys. Of course, she is ECSTATIC when I get home and gets a TON of attention. It can be done and the dogs do adjust just fine! |
I think they really do fine, I just feel bad for them when they are alone.. I have 3 little ones so they have each other and are not lonesome... I know they do OK.... more dogs than not are home alone all day while parents work, I am just a softie... LOL |
So funny that you posted this because I have been thinking about this for the past few days! I haven't left Oliver home alone yet. I was thinking today that I would go to the grocery store. It's almost like I am leaving a person and I feel that guilt too. It's good to see that others leave their dogs and they are okay. I guess I am nervous too because I worry that Oliver isn't eating enough. Good luck! Keep us posted. |
Welcome! You little one will be just fine when you return back to work. When were you planning on going back? If it is in a couple of months, Max will be that much older. Or, you could find someone to furbaby-sit for ya. |
hi and welcome,, just to let you know, i felt the same way you do when i got lexi..i was so upset leave her, but have no choice.. my mom checks on her everyday, thats a good thing.. thank god for that... otherwise lexi is home alone all day long, she has the whole house to roam around in... believe me i cried in the begining, but she really is ok at home... |
I felt bad too when I started back to work full time. But they do ok by themselves. I leave mine in a super large crate with bed, water, and toys. Mostly he just sleeps though. I try to get home for lunch but if not I just expect there will be an accident. He cannot hold his bladder for longer than 5 hours. Try not to feel too bad about leaving him. They really do adjust well! And mybe once or twice a week you can drop him off at doggy daycare or have someone come by to take him on a walk. |
I missed Rocky like crazy the first day I left him while I was at work. But like someone already said, they'll get used to the schedule. If your going to be gone longer then just a couple of hours, maybe leave some food and water and enough room for them to roam around in. Your puppy should be fine though, most dogs are. Welcome to YT! |
