Need Help - stomach problems My 8 month old pup had knee surgery on friday and this is how his stomach behavior has been like since then: Friday - surgery Saturday - normal Sunday - vomit (8 times - took him to emergency vet and took him off meds for a day and a half. We think the rimadyl gave him an upset stomach) Monday - diarrhea with mucusy substance (called the vet - she told me to give him yogurt) I also put him on the chicken and rice diet. Also back on amoxicillan (1ml twice a day) Tuesday - NOTHING - no stool no vomit Wednesday - NOTHING once again What should I do? Should I switch him back to his regular food (Innova Puppy?) Any help would be great. I'm getting really worried. |
I would keep feeding the chicken and rice but my quess is he is now constipated. It is common for people and dogs to get constipated after a surgery. Chachi got constipated after his neuter. It will work itself out. |
I would keep him on the chicken and rice also. I would probably add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin (without the spices) to help him. I would also encourage fluids by giving him chicken broth to drink (like 1/2 water 1/2 chicken broth). The extra fluid alone may help get things moving. If he has diarrhea again I would put him on Pedialyte (infant electrolyte solution) by syringe every 2 hours or so to restore the electrolyte balance. |
Here's some info. on Rimadyl - sounds like he had a reaction to it and I wouldn't give it again. What are the possible side effects that may occur in my dog during Rimadyl therapy? Rimadyl, like other drugs, may cause some side effects. Serious but rare side effects have been reported in dogs taking NSAIDs, including Rimadyl. Serious side effects can occur with or without warning and in rare situations result in death. The most common NSAID-related side effects generally involve the stomach (such as bleeding ulcers), and liver or kidney problems. Look for the following side effects that can indicate your dog may be having a problem with Rimadyl or may have another medical problem: • Decrease or increase in appetite • Vomiting • Change in bowel movements (such as diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools) • Change in behavior (such as decreased or increased activity level, incoordination, seizure or aggression) • Yellowing of gums, skin, or whites of the eyes (jaundice) • Change in drinking habits (frequency, amount consumed) • Change in urination habits (frequency, color, or smell) • Change in skin (redness, scabs, or scratching) It is important to stop therapy and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog has a medical problem or side effect from Rimadyl therapy. If you have additional questions about possible side effects, talk to your veterinarian. |
Thanks for all your help!! Its a good thing I took him off the rimadyl. Why would they give them this drug if its so bad for them? Anyway... do you think that I can wait till friday to take him to the vet? I want to give him one more day to poop. Its been 2 days would 3 days be pushing it? |
Since he just had a surgery I would think you're entitled to a free vet call. He probably hasn't eaten enough to produce a bowel movement. Your the best person to know if he seems to be alright. If he seems fine and his stomach isn't bloated and hard I would probably wait and just continue pushing fluids. There was just a post in the last day or two about a spay surgery patient not pooping for 3 days and she finally did and she was fine. About Rimadyl - there is a lot of controversy about using Rimadyl, but if the dog is not allergic to it and has arthritis it really does seem to help them. My mom's maltese was on it for years without problems. I do think the vets should tell us a little more about what symptoms to watch for though since there has been quite a few deaths from the drug. |
Here's the YT link for Cassie the spayed puppy. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ghlight=pooped |
third day of NOT pooping. Going to the vet tomorrow morning. |
Poor guy - I hope he feels better ! Good luck at the vet... |
Poor little guy! Simon has serious stomach problems too and also had a reaction to Rimadyl a long time ago. I sure hope he feels better soon, kisses to you and your baby! |
went to the vet today so I took him to the vet first thing this morning since he has not pooped yet (4th Day). He has a little fever and we switched his antibiotics. The vet said that there was stool on the thermometer when he took his temperature so he should be pooping very soon (crossing fingers). If he does nothing by Sunday then I would have to take him to a specialist that costs mucho money. Wish me luck and pray that Zoe POOOOOOOOOOS!!! |
Well I guess all you can do is keep pushing the liquids until his system gets back to normal. Keep us posted. |
I was going to say the same thing that Lacy's mom said. Be careful when it comes to the rimadyl. I hope your baby feels better soon. Michelle |
