Spaying a 2lb yorkie, very scared. Hi everyone, my little Pia is just hitting 2 lbs. She's 14 months old and I've only had her for a little over a month. She just went into heat and after her cycle is done I plan to have her fixed. I was terrified when Trixie got fixed but I am seriously a nervous wreck even thinking about Pia. 2lbs is nothing and I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or imput about this matter? I've read horror stories online about dogs her size not waking up and I'm very confused on what to do. I know having her fixed is the best for her because of cancer reasons and etc. but if anyone has any tips that I should watch for please let me know. Thanks a yorkie bunch :aimeeyork |
I don't have any input except to say my heart goes out to you on this. Bailey is 4 lb at 4 months, and we're going to wait another couple of months on her - just because of her size. I'm nervous about her, so I have some idea how frightening it must be to deal with spaying a little girl that's only 2 lb. I pray that all goes well for you. |
Little Zsa Zsa was spayed when she was 2 pounds and lived a very good life . She died last year at 14 years old . |
To Baily Peeps, Thank you for the kind words. I wish you all the luck with your little one also. They sure make us nervous, LOL. |
I just got a report back on a litter all remain under 3 lbs @ 7.5 months (two girls one boy) the girls did great with their spaying, the boy is going in next week.....make sure your vet only uses gas and they do a pre-op blood panel making sure liver, kidney and sugar levels are all good. hope this helps |
Diego, thank you for sharing that info with me. I'm sure your doggie lived a wonderful life with you. |
:animal-pa Thats great info to know. If I remember correctly I did have blood work done on Trixie before having her fixed. Thank you |
I am sure your little one will do just fine. My Jewels was 4 lbs when she was spayed and I worried also. I think it is harder on us than it is on them. |
I'm looking at everyones web sites/pages (whatever their considered, LOL) How cute all the pics are!!! Yorkies really are like chips, you can't have just one, hehehe! :animal36 If anyone is interested I have a site of my babies. Its www.sweetpuppylove.zoomshare.com Leave us a mess in my comment section if you would like. :) |
Make sure you pay the extra for the preop anesthesia blood work and this should show if she is going to have any problems with the anesthesia. Use a safe anesthesia for small dogs like isoflurane gas and do not give a preanesthesia barbituate. Make sure your vet has experience with small dogs. They are doing what they call pediatric spay and neuters now as early as 8 weeks old. Most want a female to be 3 months and at least 2 pounds though. Let us know when you decide to have the procedure done so we can all be praying for you. Is she like barely 2 pounds or close to three? |
Pixie was about 5 and half months old and a hair under 2.5 lbs when she was spayed... Didn't have a single problem. Everything went beautifully. |
HI Lacy's mom:aimeeyork Thanks for all the info. Pia is closer to 2lbs not 3. I'm just so scared for her. Thanks for the kind words. |
Sissy was barely 3 lbs and just 7 months old when she was spayed. It is nerve wracking for sure. Please make sure the pre-op blood work is done. Sissy also had an overnight stay because they wanted to keep a close eye on her because of her size. I think that was harder on me than on her. She did just fine and when she got home, you would never know she had anything done!! It will help to have all these thoughts and prayers with you and Pia. I wish I had found YT back then!! |

They don't know it's going to happen - we do. They're asleep and don't know when it's happening - we do. When it's over, they're groggy or having some discomfort - and we're hurting for them. |
Just posted a comment on your page;) I know your concern Georgie is 3 1/2lbs at 1, and we have an appointment for him next week to get neutered and I am a nervous wreck. Good luck and please let us know how it goes. |
