Lexi is so scared Well it is the 4th of july and we tried to be prepared for this and it came true, it is lexi's first 4th and she is SCARED out of her little yorkie mind. We have shut all the doors, turned up the t.v.s and she is still afriad of the fireworks. So much so she keeps peeing herself. We fed her some puppy icecream to get her mind off the fireworks but she is still shaking and peeing herself. We tried laying in bed with her and holding her but she is still afraid. What can we do? |
My yorkie puppy experienced fireworks for the first time 2 days ago and she was scaredd too! she was shaking poor thing we just held her in our arms and told her it was okay n stuff like that and she calmed down and then tonight again someone is popping fireworks and she was scared but now that im holding her she is fine idk what else you can do beside try to comfort your pup! |
Lexie Poor baby...fireworks are a favorite pastime here in Flroida for some reason. There is hardly a week that goes by and you do not hear them soemwhere in the neighborhood. My girls do not react, they are asleep right now and the noise is awful.....my husband was telling me that when he was a cop in DC the horses and dogs were conditioned not to react to fireworks and other loud sounds. Many of the horses and dogs are donated as adults, so we they are not starting with young ones and many need to be retrained. They advise a recording of the sounds your dogs is afraid of and play it daily ..I have done this with thunder when I bought older Yorkies that were scared to death of it. I played it everyday for about 30 mins..took about a week for them to stop reacting. It is best not to react yourself or baby them...the Bull dog across the street is having a terrible time the owner told me...she is barking non-stop and drooling. |
Oh poor baby - We are in the middle of a Firework INVASION in my area and they're popping all over the place. A few years ago I took Chanel shook and was really scared too - So I took her outside when they had started early (Before the actual 4th when it isn't quite so crazy) and I made it a game for her. I looked like a moron - but I clapped and oooowed and ahhhhh'd over them - and she has never shook since then. When they get BAD like tonight - I just hold her. She's my oldest and the bravest of my 2.... but they aren't bothering Cheri at all - WEIRD !! I'd say hold her and talk to her and try to just ignore them ...Pat already said don't baby her and she's right - but THAT IS SO HARD TO DO ! The reason for that is they feed off us babying them and just feel more insecure.... hopefully she'll get used to the noises and stop shaking. I feel awful hearing that for her - They ARE scary... but hopefully you can calm her enough to where she can relax a little |
Poor little Lexie, Maddie and Lucky are scared to, I have all the tv's on loud. I don't usually drug my furbabies, but maybe give her a little benadryl and it might settle her a little. Thank God it comes only once a year. I am hoping all the kids doing the fire crackers parents have to go to work in the morning and will stop by 10. |
Britt Britt..I know it sounds heartless..but by holding and comforting her, you are re-enforcing her fear...(Dog Whisperer) act normal, do something around the house, move around and keep busy...talk normal and ignore any fear...you may find it hard to believe..but I have not had a Yorkie afraid of noise and I have had dozens to raise...as pups I have lots of noise in the house..some of my young ones will stand on the vacuum when I am running it...Emee is one..LOL I played all sorts of nosies in the kennel in MD..so important for a beeder to do this for the new owner..best wishes |
Yeh well it just breaks my heart to see her scared lol |

comfort It is fine to comfort..BUT how you do it is important. You can sit and watch TV..and they can be on your lap...if they jump and shake..talk normal to them the way you would if there was no noise..don't do anything any different then you would if there was no noise. I would never leave a scared dog alone..I just do not react.. The first time Emee heard a loud firework a few weeks ago..she looked at Kate first, got no reaction, so she looked at me...I just talked normal to her and took her outside to check it out..she barked a few times then lost interest. If she was really scared and shaking, I would just keep talking to her, sit and watch TV, play ball..etc...Now that I think about it, I am feeling not needed in my Yorkies lifes..poor me...LOL |
We are from florida too, it is good to see someone form south florida on here, we are from spring hill by tampa but now live in mississippi. I tired to ignore it most of the night, we played with her fav toys, i folded laundry, cleaned a little and then got ready for bed. The shaking and peeing didn't stop, she followed me around all night whimpering, not inches from me the whole time. My husband tried to plan for his flight tomm( he is a pilot) and while doing so lexi sat on his lap, at one point she got so scared she peed on him. We finally gave up and my husband and I got into bed. We turned the t.v. on loud and laid her in between us, Lexi and my hubby are sound asleep now. Praise the lord, I have been so nervous for her. She has been shaking and peeing on everything, she is really hot too..prob all the adrenalin right? Thank you for all the advice, I REALLY TRIED HARD not to baby her....that didn't go so good but i tried and now the worst if over. Happy Birthday America!!!! but i am glad for lexi's sake the 4th only come around once a year. |

I was very fortunate, this was the first 4th for both my guys and it isn't bothering them a bit. |
My husband makes fun of me b/c i get so upset when she is upset...he says the same thing...if you are upset she will be upset so knock it off and she will be fine. I am such an over protective yorkie mommy, i don't know how i am going to handle my own kids one day...i am going to smother them he he. |
I always take mine out in the yard with me so they get used to hearing them and if they looked at me, I'd just say that it was all right and laugh and go on. They really do pick up on how you react. So, if they see that it really is OK, then they won't be afraid. Muffin wasn't at all scared of them and Kacee walks around in the yard and pays no attention to the sound! :D |
Noise When it is a once a year situation, you can get through it..but it is not around here. Two weeks ago the kid across the street has his 5th birthday and they set off fireworks all off and on all day...and the thunder storms have been bad for a few weeks..so my girls would be basket cases all the time. In MD I had a kennel full..so you understand why they could not be upset by noise..can you imagine 20 peeing, shaking, sick dogs?? Not funny!! My brother two German Shepherds are the worst with noise...and with a large breed it is dangerous...they go berserk..get out of their way!!! |
Well Gizmo took his medicine tonight. It has rained all day and now these fireworks. Doctor gave him some Acepromazine and we took a half of a tab and all is well. He might be watchin' tracers at the moment but his tummy isn't knotted up. I only use this as a last resort but the heavy rains for the last few days and now this, yes we have resorted to drugs. |
