Help! My yorkie is almost 3 months old. He is so cute, but he has behavior problems. I wanted a dog that was playful with my kids and that we could love on, too. He doesn't want to be held much. When he doesn't want us to pick him up or anything else he isn't happy with, he lets us know it. He bites us and growls meanly. I am really worried about it. I tell him no bite and sometimes hold his mouth shut for about 5 seconds and tap his nose. The breeder I got him from said none of her dogs has acted this way. Did I get the only yorkie in the world that is mean. What if he doesn't grow out of this? My husband is getting very upset. I love Champ so much, I want to help him, but nothing I do seems to be working. |

He does play bite any time we are holding him. This other biting and growling is when he is mad, he acts like is going to eat me up. The other day this little boy we know picked him up close to his face and he tried to eat his face off. He gets mad like when dogs fight each other. |
if he growls at you or bites you dont say anything just put him on the floor straight away and dont look at him or talk to him for about 5 to 10 mins then when he carms down pick him back up again, if he does it again put him down again and do the same keep doing it every time he does it and hopefuly he will learn that if he isnt nice no one will take any notice of him and when hes nice they do. it might take a while for him to learn.:) |
annie the new yorkie i have had to be rehomed to me as she bit the ladys little boy on the lip badly, with in half an hour of me having her she bite my other 3 yorkies and the cat just for looking at her, being near her, trying to kiss her, or play with her, but every time she did it i put her on the floor and didnt even look at her and with in a week she stopped doing it and now shes a different dog and not only doesnt bite anymore but she loves then all to bits and gives them kisses. |
Please, please don't tap him on the nose. Dogs' noses are extremely sensitive and it would actually encourage his aggressive behavior. It is very unlikely for him to associate the tap with his biting. Dogs don't think like us. As another poster said, when he bites give him time out and competely ignore him no matter what he does. Put him in another room, or his x-pen if you have one. Give him treats when he plays nice. He will try to please you. Dogs bite each other when they are playing. My 3 month old pup bites my nose when she gets too excited too (especially if I am lying on the floor when playing). He should grow out of it though. Try to have some patience, and I am sure things will work out. Best of luck!!! |
He is only a baby yet, 12 weeks, I think you need to be patient with him. He is going to teeth for the next 8 months or so. Give him lots of things to chew on and as recommended here, just ignore him. |

IF he mouths or bites on a person, squeal loudly and stop playing for a few minutes. He may like being held longer when he is sleepy. Children need to be taught not to put a pup near their face and to be supervised carefully-they can be rough without meaning to and the puppy won't like being squeezed too tightly or held roughly. He may just be ready to play when they want a cuddle.Does he get lots of opportunity to run around, including in the garden? He isn't a stuffed toy and may get more cuddly when he knows you all better. Let him approach you when you are sitting on the floor watching TV in the evening or whatever. He may like to lie beside someone then. he is little yet--lots of toys and chews that he can bite will be good. |
Are the children giving him time to sleep? Puppies need a lot of sleep, and maybe he just wants to be left alone. He is just a baby. Does he have a crate or bed that he can go into where everyone knows he is to be left alone. My guess is that he is not being aggressive or anti-social, he just needs his own space. |
I never heard of a 3 months old aggressive puppy . He just need time out from the kids . |
