How do you guys do it? So I have bought Chloe two harnesses to take with us on vacation. We have only gotten one of them in (the other will be here soon) and of course I put it on her! Well she freezes up when I put it on her with the leash. She won't move or anything. How do I get her to walk with me with it on? |
Georgie hates to get dressed and the harnesses I bought are basically a vest. I make him wear it around the house that is how he gets use to it. When I first put it on him he wouldn't move either, but then when he did I praised him and gave him lovies. Good luck:D |
I agree. Put it on her in the house and let her get used to it. Sissy loved being dressed from the first thing I bought her. She literally prances around. She doesn't get dressed often though because the people in my life think it's stupid!! So, I at least put her harnesses and harness dresses on her when we go out somewhere!! |
This is how we learned in school; you have to have treats, a handful. Bend down in front of your dog (short leash) begin by showing the treats, getting the dog interested, take a step, hopefully the dog follows you, let dog have a treat. Repeat, taking a few steps, giving treat. Vary the number of steps before giving treat or dog will learn every third step or so to stop for a treat. For our small dogs it's a pain in the back, all of that bending over, it does work though. Ruby did this one better than sit and we are still working on the potty training. I've never had one do that before. I just put it on them and take them out in the yard and to tell the truth the first time is hilarious! They run in every direction at once, but they catch on soon. It wasn't the first time I'd taken Kacee out, but it was one of the first few times when I put the extendable leash on her and she went nuts. She felt like she was a free yorkie! :D The only problem was that she was running so fast that she started running around a tree in the yard and it scared me to death! I was afraid she'd hurt herself, but it all worked out! :eek: If you take them somewhere they want to go besides their own little space it might help! ;) They are all different. Ya just have to keep trying things. |
If Chloe objects to the harnesses the easiest way to "get it over with" is to harness her up, be sure that the harness is fitting comfortably, and then try to distract her -- maybe with some treats, or a game of fetch, or chase, or whatever it is she likes best. If the harness fits well and is comfortable, then she will probably forget all about it within a few minutes. :D |
