Gross question
 

I came home today and I went to go feed Daisy and in her bowl was 4 maggots!:eek: I give her new food everyday and I don't know how it happened. Maybe because of the heat, it was horrable.

I was just wondering if it is bad that she ate one. I didn't see her do it but I assume because they were in her food bowl and the food was almost gone she could have ate one. I mix dry and wet food together.

I don't know how harmful it is if your baby ate a maggot - maybe someone here can offer some information.

I do know that when mixing dry and wet food you should always pick up and discard the remainder as it is a breeding ground for bacteria.

ETA: By the way, your Daisy is so stinkin' cute!!

I doubt it would be harmful for your pup to eat any wiggley little thing - especially only a few -- but, we still don't want them around - right!

I know my little pup gleefully chases insects all over the backyard all the time. I'm sure he eats a few now and then. But - I have noticed that he isn't very good at catching them.

What brand of food was that? Even if you feed new everyday, I can't imagine that is normal...I have never had that happen with pet food or human food... I certainly would contact the Mfr and ask a few questions.
I think the stomach acid would take care of the little critters, but I would ask my vet to be sure.

I don't mean to sound rude but... How in the world did they end up in the food bowl? I can see it happening if it was left outside but I am puzzled as to how it could happen inside. Maybe a call to the vet may help. I hope you little one.

I don't think eating a bug or two would be particuarly harmful. Do make sure the food dish is extra clean, especially during this hot, humid weather.

Wet food shouldn't be left out longer than 20 min. - as was said earlier, it's a breeding ground for all kinds of bacterias and stuff.

I think it is safe to assume that a fly didn't lay eggs in your dog's food after it was put out for him - flys lay about 300 eggs so I imagine there would have been quite a few more maggots present. Also, it takes 24hrs for the eggs to mature to the maggot stage, so unless you had the food out for a full day...

I would take a look at the bag of dry food as well as the can of wet food, if they havent been re-sealed properly after being opened, then a fly easily could have gotten in there - contact the manufacturer as well. I don't think these maggots appeared as a result of food being left out for 8 hours or so while you were at work or something.

As far as your puppy possibly eating a few maggots... Most maggots were probably killed when he chewed them. Most of the remaining maggots probably were killed in the stomach. Those that were not killed in the stomach might be able to cause upset stomach, intestinal/abdominal cramping, diarrhea. Chances are though, that the little buggers are dead and won't hurt your pup! I would just keep an eye on him for an upset tummy.

Think of maggots as an extra "protein snack" :D not one that we want our kids to eat, but .....

Any type of wet food should only be left out for brief periods of time. It doesn't take long for it to spoil or to invite uninvited guests to the "table".

I feed her once a day. I give her new wet food at night. It is usually all gone by the next morning. I have dry food out for her all the time. I do this all the time and this is the first time I have ever seen it. I am not going to do it anymore. I will give it to her let her eat what she wants and throw away the rest. I am sure it is my fault. I feel so bad. She is my baby!

We all have things to learn when we are new pet owners! That's why we all share here. Don't worry about it; your baby will be fine. And now you have more information to take care of Daisy. I'm sure in no time you will be offering experience and advice for other new moms!

maggots are good for you and your dog.. gross.. but still.

and all it takes is for one fly to make it into your bag of dogfood.

I don't think it hurts to consume a couple of those nasty little buggers. Think of it as extra protein :p Doctors use maggots to treat infected wounded areas so it shouldn't be a problem..
