Shampoo? Hi after reading the post that told about that poor woman losing her puppy due to an allergic reaction to her shampoo, I was wondering what types of shampoo to use on my baby. I was going to give her a bath this weekend, but want to be sure that she will be safe. What about baby shampoo does anyone know if there is a specific brand? Or what you would reccomend? Also the breeder sells a shampoo and conditioner that she makes and has had luck with, so that is an option, but it will have to be shipped so it won't be here for awhile. Thanks. Shanna |
Hi Shanna:) You should NEVER use human shampoo on a yorkie, not even baby shampoo. The reason is that our PH is different to that of a dogs and even baby shampoo can dry out their skin and cause dryness, hair loss, scratching and rashes. It may sound silly because alot of people use baby shampoo thinking that it wont hurt, but it does dry out their skin and beleive it or not,it is harsh. Its best to use a proper doggy shampoo which has the perfect PH for a dog,it doesnt have to be expensive, but at least it wont dry out their skin. I use Yorksheen and a stay in conditioner for humans..this is ok as it is sprayed directly on the hair and is not massaged into the skin ;) There are alot of great shampooŽs out there, its just a matter of findng one that suits your baby:) BTW:It was my vet who told me NOT to use human shampoo on Lady or Jess.As a vet he told me that heŽd had to treat very ugly cases of dryed out skin and bald patches over the years, and in yorkies,heŽd seen dryed out, dull coats..all due to the use of human shampoos ;) |
We've been using Buddy Rinse and Buddy Wash. Works great for him and it smells great. It's available at Trader Joe's, and probably other stores as well. |
we use either pearl or coat handlers; jerry |
I like petsilk, would like to try coat handler |
I like to use Petsilk also, it works wonderful. However I do not care for their petsilk enhancer, it is too greasy. :) |
Coat Handler is the best! I even washed my own hair with it one time! |
Where can Coat Handlers be found at? Thanks :o |

I've been using Duurstedt (sp?) and have really liked it. Has anyone compared the coat handler (is that the brand name?) to the Duurstedt?? -Angie |
I use Hydra-Pearls rehydrating shampoo that I bought at the vet's in Florida. It has a yummy almond smell! The vet tech said it's the BEST thing for OUR hair, too, but at $11.75 for 12 oz., I save it for Higgins, while I use whatever is on sale at the grocery store. ;) |
Thanks so much for the distributors phone # so I can call and see about placing an order. Im finding that I need to bath Schatzie twice a week even though she only gets a bath once a week. Is it bad for them to bath more than once a week? She get's so greasy looking inbetween baths even though she is brushed atleast twice a day if not more. Im sure a lot of her "dirty looking" is playing with our other pooch, they seem to chew on each other (typical dog play). Once Schatzie is mature I am sure she wont want to play the "chew on the other dog game" which will be great. Once bathed she only seems to be clean looking for about 3 days. Drives me nuts. Is that greasy dirty look normal for Yorkies being there hair is so fine? |
