Bathing once a month??? We just came back from the vet. Mia had her second set of shots, and she weighs 3 and 3/4 lbs. at 12 weeks. She is a healthy little cutie pie. Well, anyhow, I told the vet that we bathe Mia once a week, and that I am worried about the amount of water getting into her ears. She said her ears look fine, but she suggested that I wash her once a month, and to use wipes in between baths.   That's against everything I read about taking care of Yorkies. Ummm... guys and gals? What do you think? |
ours need baths at least once a week and I've never had a problem with ears. |
As long as her skin isn't dry I can't see any reason not to bathe her once a week. My babies would be pretty scruffy if I went a whole month. |
i've heard that putting cotton balls in their ears when you bathe them keeps water out |
Yea... that's what the vet said. Cotton balls dipped in vaseline holds them in place. The vet's suggestion had to do with the coat drying out though, not about her ears. |
Of course, the environment your Yorkie is living in would have to determine to some extent the frequency of baths they get. We live in the country and Tatum plays outside a lot. If I didn't give her a bath every two weeks at the latest, she wouldn't be able to sleep in our bed! I gave her a bath last weekend and was out of town most of this weekend. When I got home yesterday and held her, I couldn't stand it.... she had played outside with our other dog all weekend while Daddy worked out in the shop and the yard. Oh man, did she stink! If your dog were inside all day every day, I'm sure that wouldn't be the case. If you use a good conditioner and maybe some other supplement (we use the Grizzly Salmon oil for her coat and skin - you put it on her food), I wouldn't think a weekly or bi-monthly bath would be too much. |
I think it all depends on the yorkie as to the frequency of the baths. My Hobbs has a really dry coat and dry skin. We only bathe him every 2-3 weeks because he doesn't look dirty until then. Also, if we bathe him too much his skin gets dry and flakey. My parents' yorkie, on the other hand, has a really oily skin and coat...if she doesn't get a bath once a week, then she looks NASTY! So, it all depends on the dog. There is not a set standard that you should give your yorkie a bath once a week. I would wait to give her a bath until she looks dirty and looks like she needs a bath. |
I bathe mine every other week. They would smell bad if I did it every month |
When my Yorkie was a pup and had "yucky puppy hair," I did bathe him once a week. But he really doesn't need a bath that often now ---unless he goes out and gets dirty. He has no body odor - he has wonderful, easy-to-comb silky (wavy) hair - it never tangles - and to date I have kept him in a short hair cut. AND - I will have to admit - he is a "hose hog." I can't keep him out of the water when I'm outside. And, even though there is no soap, I'm sure this helps keep him clean. He gets totally soaked at least three or four times a week when I'm outside watering my plants. There should be no "hard fast rules" for bathing any dog. I have always given my dogs baths p.r.n. (as needed). Some oftener and some less often. Carol Jean |
I think most recommend every 7 to 10 days. Mine get brushed daily and a bath weekly because they sleep with me. Any longer than a week and they are usually stinky! |
I bathe my pups once a week so they have a spa day every week:D |
I had to bring up this thread because I was thinking about it today. Oliver's been getting a little "smelly" this week because he's been potty training in the rain. He's new to our house so I don't want to give him a bath just yet. I bought pet wipes and used them to clean his face, ears, and belly. They worked great! Definitely took that "wet dog" smell away! |
I bathe Brownie once every two weeks because she rarely walks outside, I'm either carrying her or she's in my bag. She doesn't like the pavement and I think it's too hot for her little feet. Our highs reach 35 degrees celcius every day, so she's got a cooling pad and the fan on at home when I'm not around or we have a/c when she comes to work with us. I just find that if I bathe her more than every two weeks, her hair starts breaking and falling out and her skin gets super dry and it looks like she has dandruff... |
I used to bathe every two weeks but i have found with a daily brushing and spray cologne in between baths, that they can get by with once a month, unless they get in the rain and the dirt and grass sticks to them. I guess it depends on how dirty your yorkie gets. All of mine stay inside. I wash butts when needed I wash my boys wee wee every day and dry my girls and boys with tissue after each pee pee. Rince feet off with waterhose when needed. You wouldn't believe what a difference this makes. This only takes a second and keeps them smelling much better. I have 5 yorkies so this is what works for me.:) |

Well, shoot yeah! With 5 of those little boogers, you really don't want to be doing 5 baths a week! ;) I was just thinking this weekend while I gave Tatum a bath that I'm glad I only had to do one of them. We've gotten it down to such a quick thing (except for when we cuddle while the conditioner is "sitting") but I can imagine having many to do at a time! |
