Can my Yorkie play outside yet? She got her first shots at 6.5 weeks which were Distemper, Adenovirus 2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus plus Coronavirus. She is getting her second set of shots today and before I go to the vet later I was just wondering what you all think... So is it safe for her to play at a park yet (not a dog park, just her running around). I am afraid of her getting sick from other past dogs being there, etc. Thanks. |
When ALL of her shots are complete you may take her out, not before, and that includes letting her walk in the vet's office. Hope you are enjoying your little one........ |

after her third set of shots you can be sure that she's fulling inoculated and ready to roam the parks :) so another 3-4 weeks after today. |
I have two yorkies which I trained to go potty outside. I got one at 7 weeks and one at 8 weeks and I let both of them go outside right when I got them for potty training reasons. My first yorkie was perfectly fine with this, but my second yorkie came down with Coccidia, which is a parasite she picked up in the yard. The vet said that it wasn't too serious and she gave me some antibiotics which cleared it up in no time. Never once did the vet tell me NOT to take them outside before all their shots were done, though. If you are training yours to use pee pads, then I would wait to take her outside until all her shots are finished. But, if you are training her to go potty outside, then I don't see any serious reason why you shouldn't let her go outside. (in my opinion) Just avoid areas where other dogs have pooped. If she does happen to come down with something, it won't be anything serious that the vet can't clear up real fast. |
I was also told by my vet not to let my Yorkie outside until she'd gotten all her shots. She might come down with something and that will mean more trips to the vet's office and more vet bills. Better safe than sorry......... |
She uses pee pads inside so I'm not taking any risks letting her go outside until the vet says ok. On another note, her apt is wed, not today, my mistake. |
In my opinion, I would ask your vet. This is what I plan on doing during my first trip to the vet with Gracie. After raising a kitten with immune system problems and repeated infections, I will be most careful with my new little Gracie. You never know what dog has done something where, and what disease that dog might have had. I most fear Parvo and that is certainly nothing to take lightly. If you have a fenced yard and know that no other dogs have been there for a long time, you might be OK. I live in a Townhouse with shared green space. No one potties their dogs in their "own yard", always somewhere else. Gracie won't be going outside until the vet says it is OK. |
My pup played in my yard (even with our healthy neighbor dogs) from the time I got him at eight weeks. When I say "healthy neighbor dogs" - I mean exactly that. I live in a condo association and six duplexes here share the same backyard - which is is about two football fields long. There are four little spoiled dogs who are routinely groomed, perfectly healthy, and totally up to date on all their shots, etc. And - they all spend hours playing together - daily - or should I say "more in the evening" now that it's so hot. BUT - I didn't take my pup other places until he was older and through with all his shots. Good luck! Carol Jean |
