Went to vet today; anyone heard of a "hot spot"? JPop had a place on his little hip that he had licked and scratched so much it was almost raw. Dr. Bob called it a hot spot. I don't remember the medical name, but he said it started as a little bit or sting and from JPop licking the moisture created a bacteria and it just spread.......last night it was about nickel size, this morning it was more like quarter. Poor baby got 2 shots, and antibiotic and an anti inflamatory and two other medicines. An oral antibiotic and an oinment. He's been sleeping most of the day. Vet said it probably was a burning/itching sensation.:( If anyone has an advise or comments they would be appreciated. |
hi... Tootie has never had them but my Chi mix has.... there is a type of "doggie" powder that my vet gave me along with anti biotics, it seemed to make it better... just keep him as cool as possible and it should fade away... where in La are you? |
My old lab/chow mix use to get hotspots in the summer when we lived in Georgia. I think we put some kind of prescription ointment on it. He eventually just stopped getting them. |

Our cat had a hot spot under his chin a while back. If I remember correctly it can be caused by a number of things from stress to a physical environmental factor. We had started to use a new chemical spray to keep our cat off of certain places, so we thought that was the cause of his hot spot. We stopped using it, and put Neosporin (I think) on his hot spot and it got better. It heals pretty quickly but it takes a while for hair to grow back. If you put the ointment on regularly, and try to figure out what the cause is, and eliminate the cause, you pup should be fine. It is not a major thing as long as you keep an eye on it. Make sure it is healing though because it can spread fast and get pretty nasty. Well, good luck. I hope your baby will heal soon. |
get better soon my mom's yorkie gets this too. she takes allergy meds.:( :getwell: :getwell: :getwell: :getwell: :getwell: :getwell: maybe some missing link or wellness super 5 supplement could help? |
hi, I am in Baton Rouge... its nice to see so many more La people here.... I am so addicted.. LOL d |
My chow-mix use to get them and Doc gave me a spray that tasted bad and Lucky wouldn't lick it. Like you said the more they lick the bigger it get, maybe call the vet and see if he has any spray that would stop him from licking. Lucky would get them on the lower leg. Hope JPop gets better soon. |
my maltepoo I use to have had those. and the hair comes out at that spot or his would so I started putting neosporin on it and it cleared right up. And everytime he started scratching a lot in one place and it started lookin like it was becoming a hot spot I just put it on him 3 or 4 times a day. never had anymore problems with him having them anymore. They would just clear up with that. neosporin is an antibiotic ointment that I use for lots of things and its good. |
