Biting A LOT, PLEASE HELP ME!!! My 3 month old yorkie, Louie is biting so much. At first it was cute, but now..it's really hurting and he's breaking skin when he bites. Sometimes I'll go to kiss him and he'll grab a hold of my lips. I know that right now he is teething and he has a lot of chew toys, but I want him to be a sweet baby and not bite. What can I do so he knows that what he's doing is wrong. I have been telling him "no" in a firm voice and then giving him a "time out," basically ignoring him for 10 min. and then I'll go back and play with him BUT he'll bite me again...we do this over and over and over and I guess he just doesn't understand that biting=no playing with mommy & daddy. What can I do differently, am I doing the right thing??? |
Your baby sounds like my Esme. She is also a bitter. She bites because she wants to play, and for some reason she thinks biting=playing. It has gotten better BUT it's still a problem. Every day I pray for her adult teeth because these puppy teeth are sooo sharp and hurt A LOT. This is what I have done. Most of these things have not worked for Esme though. Firm No Clapping my hands Saying ouch really loud Time out Shaker can (water bottle filled with pennies) -when she bites I shake it. Holding her mouth closed and saying 'no bite!' (I know, awful, but I was desperate) Tapping her nose Flipping her on her back and growling at her (pure desperation) Giving her something she CAN bite on (this works short term) Like I said, most of these things haven't worked, BUT it HAS gotten better. She is now 5 1/2 months old. Good Luck! |
Biting problem Hi, My Jack is 6 months old today, and he is finally starting to ease up on the biting. I was beginning to think I had bought a large bat instead of a puppy for awhile. He now just gently bites me when I am playing with him, and when I groom him he actually knaws really softly on one finger. He has drawn blood a few times, and mainly from us pulling away from him quickly when playing fetch. My vet says to use some tobasco sauce on your finger, and I have had some other Yorkie Yakkers tell me the same thing. Good luck, and if he starts staying up all night you know you have a bat not a puppy. ;) Jack and Jill |
Kelsey bites too! She thinks im playing sometimes when im punishing her and she'll bite..i give her a little pat on the butt and say "no bite, bad girl" and she bites a little softer after that..lol and then she'll kiss me. So it's like she knows..but she's trying to appoligize and tell me she's just playing. |
Crazy at this will sound, my pup was 6 weeks old when I got him, so I had to teach him about bad biting. As his mother would have done, I pin him down, roll him over on his back, hold him there, look him in the eye and growl at him in a low voice. It worked for me. When he is being bad, I growl at him, just like an older dog would do. You could also hold his mouth shut and say 'no bite' several times while you restrain him. The pup will probably challenge you a few times, just repeat the restraints anytime he tests you to see if the rule is in force.... |
Hi! jackandjill! Have you tried putting tabasco sauce on your fingers when your yorkie bites? Did it work? |

Thats exactly what i did, i got Ted at just 6 weeks old, and i flip him on his back and tell him off and its working for me  Dawn |
He was in a really biting mood one day, so I thought I would try it, he took one sniff and ran away, and since then his "bites" are more like love nibbles. I have the bottle in sight so when I reach for it he seems to know, "OK I had better quit", so I think it is more a threat now than having to use it. |
i heard that dogs who tend to bite are usually taken away from their litter too young. they don't mean to hurt you---they think that you are a littermate and they want to play. |
That's interesting, lickthestar. Never heard that. I got Molly at 8 weeks, she is almost 12 now. She has just gotten worse about biting the past couple of weeks. I use a rolled up piece of paper. We used to use that on our boston terriers, it doesn't really hurt, but the noise scares them. I call it my spanking paper and she is starting to learn what that means. It is starting to work. I think I'm going to try the tobasco sauce, though. Except I guess I'll have to put it on my hands, feet, nose, etc.... :) |
