help, should I sedate?? The fourth of July is coming up which brings up this question. Should I sedate my babies for the fireworks?? We live very close to where the fireworks are, we can even watch the fireworks from our house. So you can imagine how loud it going to be. They get freaked out really bad with loud noises as it is and it sounds like they are shooting off the fireworks at our house, that is how bad the noise is which compared to the loud noises they have heard is probably 4 times louder with the fireworks. I am afraid they might get frantic and try to get out of their pen and possibly hurt themselves and just go crazy or go into shock or something. My cocker even runs and hides and shakes the whole time and she is not even sensitive to loud noises. I was thinking of giving them this calming medicine I found at the pet store, it is all natural so it is not harmful and it says it would be good for situations like this. What do you guys think?? |
if you know they are going to get very upset then i would talk to your vet and ask him for a few acepromazine tablets to calm all the doggies down for the day. dogs have been known to jump out of windows, break thru dogs, chew their legs, and do other harmful things to themselves out of nervousness and fear. |
Is there something available that doesn't sedate them for hours? Sissy heard her first fireworks last week (from a city over) and barked like crazy till they were done. She barks at loud thunder also. I wouldn't want to sedate her for longer than the duration of the fireworks (maybe an hour or so). |
Darn Those Fireworks! My suggestions would be to forget the drugs and take your furbabies away from your home while the fireworks are going on. That might not be a possibility but just my thought. Last night Jack was barking and I stepped outside to see what was up and found it must have been the firecrackers that were going off in the neighborhood. These next few days will be filled with all the great noises celebrating the birth of our country! Unfortunately some of our furbabies get really scared by these noises.:smileyfla |
If it is all natural then I dont see that it would be bad to use |
I also agree that maybe you can take them elsewhere to avoid the noise... poor babies I could never do that plus I would be to scared of the side effects it might have .......JMHO |
Can't help you with this one. My little terrors aren't afraid of anything. I really doubt something over the counter is going to make that big of a difference, but I don't think it would be harmful either. I think I would just turn up the music and play fetch until they wear themselves out! |
Nothing ever phases either of my dogs - we've been through fireworks, lightening and thunder storms, and everything -and they never even open their eyes if they are lying around. I would skip the drugs also - and take your pups somewhere else for the evening. OR - sometimes other noises going on can cause them to play less attention to fireworks, etc. --- like the TV, radio, etc. OR - do you have a part of the house that might be quieter - I have a couple rooms in my basement (that are situated more in the interior of the house) that would be much quieter. Good luck - it's no fun when these noises scare your pets. Carol Jean |
My Chanel was really scared of fireworks in my neighborhood - they land in my yard....:( it's awful. What I did was take her outside to SEE THEM....and and clapped and acted like the big noises were fun - it really helped her cope with her fear - the week they were going off all night - she was much better and stayed in my lap without shaking..... Cheri isn't afraid of them and she was the one I worried about - But you can turn it into a game and it may take away some of the anxiety ....Good luck - if your neighborhood is like mine - they do this for 2 weeks - |
I am not going to be home for the 4th. I have not decided whether I will take Lola or not. She does not seem to fear loud noises, but I am worried. If your dog has a history of fear of loud noises, maybe sedation is a good idea. Your vet should have the answer you are looking for. |
I think taking them away is the better idea. Even if you just put them in your car and drive to the next town or something. Good luck! |
I basically do the same thing as villette, make a game out of it, Penny was terified of the firecrackers, and now we play oh its boom-boom time. and she barks and runs and has a ball... But yes most dogs are afraid of loud noises, and they get scared. |
I don't know that taking them to a different place will help, as this will be going on everywhere. I got some of that calming stuff once and have tried it on Maddie when I was going to clip her. I didn't really notice a difference with her anxiety. I think Villette's idea of making a game out of it is a good idea. I hope your little one's get through all the boom booms okay. For some odd reason, Maddie isn't scared of fireworks or thunder. I'm so glad of that, but feel so bad for the little furbabies that are so fearful of them. Good luck! |
Thank you everyone for all the tips and advice!!:thankyou2 I can't take them out of town because I don't have any where to go, all my relatives are far away and I am new in this town and don't know anyone yet. Also, like someone said, they will be going off everywhere. I love your idea Villette, don't know why I never thought of that!! :doh34: I will definately try that and I really think it will work with Trixie and Scampers. I am a little worried about Poptart though. This is only his first week here and he is still very insecure about everything. It is hard just to get him use to the others. I will try to make it a game for him but at this point I don't think it will work with him since he is so insecure. Maybe by next year he will have it down and enjoy the fireworks. Thanks so much for the idea!!:D :D |
I know it is to late for this year but you might want to consider this for next year. This is a little older article but they have been having success with this product: http://www.anxietywrap.com/inthenews.htm |
