So I don't know if I've maybe misunderstood but is it true that you should get rid of all of the pee stains before shampooing a carpet? I'm afraid to bring a black light..lol..but is that what I need to do? I'm planning to steam clean a couple of areas in my house where when Coco's been sick she's either thrown up or had accidents there. I immediately clean it up with a stain/odor remover for pets but do I need to make sure the stains are completely gone bfore I steam clean? Would I be spreading the pee pee if I just start shampooing?

I'm not completly sure but I would think you would be spreading them.... do u still have stains there or just the yucky after smell?

Hummmm...I am going to steam clean my carpets, too, once I get this new baby potty trained. I am glad you started this thread so I will know what to do when that time comes for me! :D Personally, I thought that when you immediately clean it up after they "go," that that is all you need to do and all you can do until you steam clean. Then steam cleaning and/or shampooing the carpet will take care of the nitty gritty stuff. I know that when you steam clean that there is a vaccum attached to the steamer. So, I think that the steam would loosen all the stains and the vaccum sucks them up and away. I don't really see how a steam cleaner could "spread" the pee. But, I very well could be mistaken :rolleyes:

P.S. -- I'm scared to take a black light to my carpet, too! :eek: Luckily I live in an apartment temporarily, so my permanent residence will hopefully be free of potty stains! (That is, at least until we decide to get another puppy :p )

Well I cleaned it right after and there's really no smell, but IIIII know where the stains were and I have a dark grey carpet so in some areas there is still a very faint light tint, which I know is where she had her accidents. I don't know where it was that I heard that you HAVE to make sure to use something that has enzymes in it to get rid of the urine smell and odor otherwise when you shampoo the carpet you're just spreading it. I don't know but I DEFINETELY don't want to spread it..lol

I rent my steam cleaners (from the Jewel) and I buy the cleaner, and also a pet stain/enzyme pre-treatment that you simply squirt over the stained area and leave it on until you do the regular cleaning with the machine. This has always worked for me and my dog, although I have never used a blacklight to check. it did help stop the accidents though..

Great info thanks! Yea she hasn't had any accidents in a long time. But for a while there she was sick real bad with diarrhea and poor girl couldn't hold it. I just want to get rid of them cause I know they are there and it grosses me out..lol...I will get a shampoo and a pet odor/stain remover with enzymes. I can't imagine how crappy it would be to spread it :eek:

I believe this is the correct procedure. I have heard that if you don't use a neutralizer on the stain, the steam will "lock" in the urine odor and the dog will still be able to smell it and it's the odor that stimulates it to go potty. Therefore, simply steam cleaning the carpets is useless for removing urine and feces odors from the carpet.

YES, You have to put something on the urine first. According to the back of these products you must put this on first before shampooing. So it will neutralize it and break down the emzymes. If you shampoo first it mess the break down up... ???? I'm no scientist but that is what it said to do.. I did it and it worked. I let it dry for a whole day then shampooed. It worked take the black light over stains before you shampoo and make sure they are gone. Some of mine I had to retreat and then wait another day til the black light showed nothing. If you clean your carpets and dont do this then you are just weting the urine and it will spread out more.

Oh God I don't know if I can handle the black light..lol..I may never want to sit in Coco's room again..lol...I should just brave it and do it, and definetely while B/F is NOT home. Ok so I will retreat on friday, the steam on saturday. So I just poor a pet stain remover all over the carpet and just let it soak? The carpet cleaners at the stores have a pet/stain and odor remover shampoo, is that the same thing? I definetely don't want to spread wet urine :eek:

No its not the same thing. You have to use this stuff first or you have a urine smell when you are done doing your carpets if there are alot of urine marks. Trust me it works I've spent the last 8 days in doing this on 2 month old carpet.. It is no fun!!!

No, the pet/stain and odor remover shampoo is not the same thing as the neutralizer. Use Simple Solution or Nature's Mircale or Urine Gone for your pre-treat.

I'm actually borrowing one from my friend who has 2 pugs. But around here I think it's like $19.00 for the cleaner rental and like $5 for shampoo.

oh wow, that's not bad at all...you just have to know how to do it I guess. That's the part that scares me. I don't want to have shampoo all gunked up in my carpet from not doing it right...
