Hi I am new here >>> My yorkie is a 5 year old female that I have had for a little over a year. Her name is Pepper and I bought her from a breeder after he had no more use for her because she had to be fixed after several c-sections. She is a little girl only weighing in at 4lbs 4ozs. She is very loving and has fit into my family very well except for a couple of problems. One is that is really likes to hide in the back corner of any closet. Somedays I have to go on a hunt if I ever want to see her at all. She also sleeps alot but she has had 2 checkups since we got her and she has been in perfect health so I am not overly worried about that. The other BIG problem is that she will not potty train and I have tried everything I can think of and everything that could be suggested, nothing really works at all. She uses my son's bedroom as her bathroom when she is loose on the house ( theh room has been totally cleaned and urine scent removed with a good cleaner, she just goes right back in a uses it again if she gets a chance) The other part of this is that she will poop in her own bed even though she has a pad to use. Any help at all would be wonderful.. I am tapped out on ideas. Thanks :animal-pa |
First of all, welcome to YT!!! I was wondering where you got your Yorkie and what kind of person you got her from? You mentioned that she had had several C-sections, did you buy her from a breeder? The hiding and potty training may be because she may have been kept in a cage for a long time and not much human interaction? But if the bathroom works, maybe try putting a wee wee pad in there and she could use that as her potty? Maybe if you gave us a little bit more info on how your Yorkie was raised, we could help a little more? |
I really don't know a lot of info on how she was raised Yes a bought her a breeder. From what I could learn from the vet that took care of her when she was with the breeder and from the breeder himself she was kept in a small pen and was not treated as a pet. She pretty much melted my heart the moment I saw her. I actually went to the breeder to look a 7 month old puppy but just fell in love with Pepper and took her home instead. I thought she just looked liked she needed me. :) |
Hello and welcome to YT :) I am sure if there is help to be had this is the right place for your questions. There are so many nice people on this site and they are glad to help out in anyway they can. I know you are going to love being a member here ;) |
Welcome. You have established that she was kept in a small pen, how sad, but that may have a lot to do with her potty problems. You will have to start all over with training, that will not be easy. If she has been with the same person the whole time, it will take a while for her to warm up to you, she is lost right now. She won't completely avoid you for you are caring for her, but you will have to let her come on her terms, she will warm up faster and closer to the person who takes care of her. |
You have to start new habits small area , wee wee pads a treat and a daily walk will help you bond very quikly harness dress because she probably cant walk on a leash as she starts using pads consistantly add more space be firm letting her run around a big house makes it hard to show her what you want and easy for her to hide instead of bond and most of all walk walk walk:animal36 |
Not sure what to tell you there. I do have to say god bless you because you gave this sweet girl a chance to be loved, be carefree and be a pet vs taking that new and shiny puppy home. Hopefully with a bit of time she will adjust and realize that you are there to love her. Sad that people can only see them as money making items. Could she have any bladder issues from the c-sections. I know that might sound silly. But in humans you can sometimes be left with bladder issues from pregnancies and c-sections. The muscles are weakened and thus kegal exercise are recommended. I was wonder if her heavy breeding and the c-sections could be a part of her potty problems. Odds are she was probably bred every heat since she was deemed old enough to carry a litter. Post a picture of her...we would love to meet the little doll. |
bless you for saving this precious baby! I wish I could find one to bring home |

Kudos to you for saving this poor pup, I'm sure she's a lot happier with you then at her old home. |
Bless your heart for rescuing this little lady! Poor little thing doesn't have any idea what potty training or being loved and feeling secure is all about. It will take a little time, but she will learn to trust you and love you. Right now she doesn't know that life can be a wonderful thing when sharing it with someone who truly cares for her! Thank goodness you found each other!!! Welcome to YT!!! |
awww this is so great...she will come around ...be slow, easy and loving ...I would suggest getting panties for her until you get her potty trained it will make it easier for the both of you. good luck and congrats on your new wonderful addition |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new little girl. Bless you for rescuing her, it sounds like she needed you! Give her some time, what everyone else is saying makes lots of sense. She obviously wasn't treated as anything other than a baby maker. All of this love and freedom is foreign to her. I would add to shut the closet doors (or bedroom doors if the closet doesn't have doors). As she was always in a small crate, you don't want to confine her in a small area, but is there a room you can block off for her (the kitchen, perhaps) and equip it with pee pads, food, water and a doggie bed. A bed with some kind of hood (partial or full) will probably give her that secure feeling (ie; hiding in the closet) but start to retrain her in the right direction. Potty training is hard enough with a puppy, so you will need much patience. I like the idea of lots of walks (using a harness) as well. Best of luck to you both. Give her lots of hugs and kisses, but take her lead. I'm sure you will be letting us know very soon just how well she is doing. |
Welcome to YT that is awesome that you are giving her a loving home and the chance to be a pet and not a baby making machine (sorry that bothers me). I would just suggest having patience with her, don't give up it might take a while but the reward will be great for you and her. Good luck and kudos to you for taking her:thumbup: |
Welcome to YT. You'll find lots of help here for sure. It sounds to me like you have to start from scratch as if she were a puppy. Poor baby had no love at all it sounds like. Please be patient it really is time and patience that is needed. I have used one special treat when it was time to go potty outside. It was liverwurst!. My daughter's trainer told her about it for her min-pin who was a devil to train but did so shortly after using the liverwurst. Everytime you take her out and she does anything give her a very small piece, that is all that is needed. Take her out very often until she learns to control her bladder and use the liver-wurst ONLY for potty outside. Good luck. I have never used pads or paper. All my dogs were trained to go outside. She is lucky to have you. Look forward to you posting "she's trained"! |
congrats on the new addition to your family . poor dog kept just for breeding! i have a cat that i got from the vet the breeder left him there because he had ringworms! she had"too many cats" he's a cfa persian black anyways i believe he was in the same situation but was still young still and hasn't been out of a cage his whole life i believe until i got him! he took a week to come out from hiding! he still will only come to me though nobody else but he's fine now. they get very attached to the main person caring for them feeding brushing petting & so on he likes to sleep by me almost nightly. they do need some time to adjust. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/IMG_1740.jpg Bocephus the persian |
