I was looking at the receipt for the stool sample, and the description is "Fecal analysis SAF method." Can someone explain how this test is done and how accurate it is? Is there still a high probability of the test results being a false negative for giardia and anythig else?

I know that you had Angel's stool sample done again right after she completed her meds. My vet's office won't do a repeat stool sample till at least 30 days following the meds to really ensure that the giardia is gone and it is not just the meds still in the system, particularly since they are cyclical. The first round of Pancur treatment for Sissy didn't work and a month later the traces of Giardia became a mass outbreak. She won't have a repeat stool for another couple weeks since they wanted to wait 60 days after treatment this time (as her treatment was much longer). So, we'll have to wait and see what that shows.

In the meantime, she has been well with no diarrhea, mucous or blood. Time will tell with Sissy. I have been told it is difficult to rid and may require multiple treatments. Good luck with Angel. I would have another stool sample done to make sure the Giardia is gone.

I called the vet's office to ask if I needed to wait a certain number of days before giving the sample and they said no. They said I could bring one in the same day I finished the meds, but I brought one in the day after because it was late and she hadn't had a bowel movement.

I hope Sissy gets better soon. Does her stool look normal? What does normal stool look like?

Do you take your dogs out for walks when they have giardia?

I have taken her on walks since the Giardia, but she doesn't generally go to the bathroom when we're walking (if she does, I have potty bags I use). Her stools look normal in color (brownish) and firmness.

Im so sorry that Angel has being sick. I think you should take a sample to your vet If she keeps having soft and mucous stool. Maybe she needs to stay on her meds a little longer. I will have her in my prayers. Please keep us posted. :ghug:

Ok. Maybe TCC and I will take her for a walk for the first time. We're trying to get her used to her harness right now but she doesn't like it. Does her stool look wet, matte or dry?

Thanks. Her stool seems to be improving. If it doesn't continue to improve, I'll take another sample to the vet's.

TCC and I took Angel to the vet's today to have her ears checked for ear mites or an ear infection, which you can read about here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45156. We asked about her stool results and whether they could've been a false negative. She said it's possible, and if we wanted to, we could do another test. She said she didn't really think it mattered how long you wait before giving another sample. She said one client gave a sample of their dog's stool the next day after finishing the meds and the test was positive. She said we could take a scoop of stool for 3 days, put it in some solution and keep it in the fridge and then bring all three samples to the vet's office to be tested for a more accurate result. This would help catch any cysts that might remain or pass through. Since Angel's stool is improving, we're holding off on doing this test. If it becomes watery again, then we'll consider it.

We decided to do the serial stool test over 3 days because Angel's stool was watery one time. I don't know if it's cuz she was stressed from being put downstairs in her pen while I cleaned her mess in the pen upstairs. She doesn't like being downstairs and will whine and bark. Well, we got a container with solution (smelled like vinegar) in it with a scoop attached to the lid from the vet's on Sat. and scooped a sample every day for 3 days. The samples we got were normal though, no watery poo but one was lighter in colour. We kept the container in a cooler with ice because we didn't want to store it in the fridge. I took the container to the vet's on Mon., and the office called me today with the results. Her stool samples are negative for worms and parasites so I'm happy! I just hope her ears are fine now. We're taking her to the vet's on Fri. to have them checked.
