Our new neighbor - eek! She moved in less than a week ago. My husband met her today while he was walking Penny, and she said something to the effect of "Oh, is this the barker?" Meanwhile, Penny is going nuts as she does when she sees anyone she doesn't know. We've tried to control it, but she just goes spastic, especially outdoors. She even mentioned the Dog Whisperer as DH was trying frantically to calm Penny as she went nuts barking at other people walking by. Oh my! :eek: She has two little dogs that seem well behaved so far. Penny has been extra yappy because we've had the windows open for the nice weather; she hears every noise. I don't know what to do with her!! What an impression. She really is a good dog. :( |
What kind of dogs does the neighbor have? Maybe they have been de-barked...Seriously, I have 8 that go out on my back deck and I am super careful because my neighbor has cancer and her bedroom is not 30 feet from my deck. I just go out with them onto the deck and we scoot right back in if they start barking. Neighbors should not have to put up with barky dogs-I know I don't like to hear them but some noise can be expected..Is there any way you can put up a barrier that would cut down on the transmission of the noise...and also keep your dog from seeing others and barking. Training with a noiseless whistle might help... My feeling is make REEEALLY good friends with the neighbor and maybe she will stop being bothered by the barking...I do know of 2 families in my neighborhood who sold their homes and moved because of incessant barking..That was a bit extreme... |
I totally agree that we should never allow our dog's barking to bother our neighbors. Neither of my dogs are barkers - but, if they ever do - I am outside and bring them in immediately. If I had a dog that barked - I'd just tell my new neighbor - that my dog barked - but that I would still be doing whatever I could to keep it from bothering her. Good luck! Carol Jean |
I'd send her over a basket of home-made muffins or cookies to welcome her to the neighborhood. Include a little card and lightly mention to her that you're aware that your little one is a barker, but that you're working on it :)! I think a friendly move like that on your part will really make her feel like part of the neighborhood and less apt to complain. Perhaps getting her dogs and your dog together for a play date will help, too! |
I wouldn't want to live by me sometimes. When my four go out and they see something or someone they will bark. They only go out if I am with them. Penny sound like Rudy he act like he is going to attack you, but he only want you to pet and talk to him. I just got new neighbor about a week ago and they have a dog and mine went crazy when they saw her but, now they just bark for a second and go to the fence to visit. Penny will get use the them before you know it. |

Sounds really good to me too. You could even go a step further and ask her what she did to get her puppies to be so well behaved. That will show her that you are a good neighbor. It's always better to get into a dialog. :aimeeyork |
Perhaps youi could elicit her help in correcting your dogs behavior, since she did such a good job on hers. She probably will be more than happy to help you, and you will become friends in doing so. It sounds to me like she was just trying to be helpful, yet let you know in a nice way that your dog's barking is bothering her. I have never had a barker. People make comments all the time about "those yappy little dogs", but I've never had a problem. Chachi is just now starting to bark at things, and I am right on top of it, because I can't stand it myself. the good news is."It can be corrected with time and persistance". |

I don't think she was being mean when she said it; I was just embarrassed when my husband told me about it. Penny is never left outside to bark. She just peeks out the windows and lets me know about all of the activity. Unfortunately, she won't get used to the neighbor and stop barking. She never got used to the old neighbors, and she liked them. She's just the type to bark. Even when DH comes home she'll start barking and run to meet him. The neighbor hasn't had her dogs debarked... I've heard them. They just seem more mild-mannered. Penny is a hung-strung dog, always has been. We've been working on her barking since we got her 2 years ago, to no avail. We'll keep trying, though. ETA: I should mention that I met her a few days ago. She explained she lived alone, and asked about our situation. I told her it was my husband, myself, and our Yorkie... who she's probably heard. She said yes she had and that she had two that we'd probably heard. I have heard them, but only twice! Penny on the other hand... |

I am so glad I don't have any neighbors :) :) Mine are barkers especially one of them who gets the others going. I've tried everything imaginable to get them to stop, including all the things suggessted on YT, to no avail. They are barkers. :( I don't think I could stand neighbors complaining about my dogs especially when their barking drives me crazy sometimes. |
What drives me crazy is that we have a neighbor with three dogs who not only bark but they bay and get any and all dogs in the neighborhood who are outside or inside with open windows to chime in. I have had to be really firm with Bailey on this one and now Tia with her baby barks ( but between you and me... right now they are really cute ;) ) |
