Is this true? Mimi is 3 months old today and her ears are still down. I went to Pet Smart yesterday and one of the reps said that if I gave her cottage cheese her ears will come up and I also needed to shave some hair from her ears. I've heard of shaving the hair but not cottage cheese. She stated that the calcium will make the cartlidge stronger. So I went and picked up some cottage cheese...she loves it and Timmy does too but he doesn't need it because his ears are up. Is it okay to give it to him too? Have anyone ever tried this and found that it works? If so, how much cottage cheese do you give them? I got the regular one...should I get light? |
i really doubt that the cottage cheese is going to help make her ears stand up. its a tasty occassional snack, though you may want to be careful because it can be too much dairy for some dogs. |
If you want, you can do a search on the forum- type in ears, or puppy ears, and there are quite a few posts about this. I was wondering the same thing about their ears, what age do they perk up, etc. and I learned quite a bit. Also, I saw the cottage cheese thing come up a few times, some people on here recommend it and say it works. Hope this helps! |
i've never heard of the cottage cheese. when i picked romeo up from his breeder she told me to keep his ear hair very short to avoid weigh down. |
Definitely keep the ear shaved. I never heard that cottage cheese helps to get the ears to stand. I do know that even when they stand when they start teething they can drop. Usually people recommend the cottage cheese as a source of calcium. |
What a coincidence, I was just checking out the YT Nursery Forum, and there is a thread on this very thing! It's on the first page- |
I never heard of the cottage cheese thing, but it can't hurt. |
2 Attachment(s) I did some surfing on the net and some people use it to help get their dogs ears to stand. I am going to give it a shot! I will let everyone know if it works. Here are pics of her....I still think she is a cutie with her ears down |

I think the cottage cheese is an old wives tale but shaving the ears will help |

My vet said giving calcium (cottage cheese) and/or taping are old wive's tales. He said shaving was beneficial and massaging. All of my Yorkie's ears stood up by 3 months so I really haven't tried anything other than shaving and trimming the top one-third. |
My willikers ears will flop when his hair isn't shaved from the tip 1/3 down. As soon as i trim them they are back up again. Try trimming and taping for about a week. Be sure to take the tape out everyday and massage the ears for circulation. This works for me. Some yorkies hair is exremly heavy on the ears. I have four with thin hair on the ears and needs no shaving. |
