Help 6 Weeks And 1.7 Lbs Is This Big? 2 Attachment(s) It's official we get uor babies on monday they just got their first shots and the vet said they could go home because they are so healthy. But i was wondering if 1.7lbs is big at this stage and if you all think they will stay small? The mom is 4.4 lbs and the dad 3.2? i don't know?:p :animal-pa :animal36 :aimeeyork |

Kali weighed 1.4 lbs. at 8 wks and at 12 wks she weighed 1.12 lbs. I don't think that is big. Kobe is 7 yrs. old and weighs 5 lbs. I'm hoping she reaches his weight but I don't think she will. |
Well i don't want a really tiny one but i did want one like 4-4.5 lbs. the momma has weened them and then decided to try to still feed them and they are also on dry food so i hope it's just them getting lots of food! LOL |
I think they will be closer to 5 and 1/2 pounds to 6 pounds. I'm not one of these that think 12 weeks should be mandatory for a Yorkie pup, but 6 weeks is really too young. I would see if the breeder would hold on to them at least until 8 weeks preferably 9. |

I agree 100%. The longer they are with their mother the better. |

This might be a good rule of thumb but do remember there are exceptions. My Pirogue was 2.10 at 8 weeks, that equals about 8#. At a little over 2yo he weighs 11.2#. He is a throwback, he is bigger than his mother who weighs 10#. I don't have any examples of this example going the other way but I'm sure there are some out there. Sylvia |
age The vet said they are ready to go at 6 weeks...the vet knows little about Toy breeds IMO. The stress of leaving the dam too early and going to a new home can cause a healthy puppy to crash...but fortunately they are a good size at 6 weeks...best wishes.. PS..27 of the countries leading vet colleges are now recommending NO shots before 8 minium...vaccine too early can actual make the pup more susceptible to the vary diseases we are trying to prevent...it can interfer with the immunities from the dam...read up on it.. |

As for weight, Gracie weighed 2 lbs 3 ounces at 8 weeks. By calculations of these charts, she should be a little over 6 1/2 lbs. She is 5 1/2 lbs and is over 2 years old. Rebel was around 3 lbs at 8 weeks. By calculations, he should have been a 9 lb boy, in fact, he weighs 4 1/2 lbs and is over a year. |

Diesel was 1.8 at nine weeks old and now at 11 months old he is about 4.5 pounds. So it can vary a lot. I agree with the other about 6 weeks being rather young. When did she wean them? Congrats on the new babies. michelle |
i was wondering also the little boy i just got is 1.12 at 6 weeks . i also think that's too young to sale them as their teeth aren't hardly through their little gums yet! but he will be fine with me..at least i hope all goes well!! any ideas how big he may get? |
no they are 6 and a half weeks they will be 7 and a half weeks when i get them. i would not take a 6 wk old puppy home ever and the only reason i am taking them at 7.5 is because they are healthy and the breeder has a yearly marathon somewhere(i forget) to walk for a disease and she won't be there i would rather take them then have a puppy sitter. I am just boggled at the size because mom & moms parents are small and the same for the dads. just curious thank you all for the concern and advice i will take any i can get |
Sorry-that sounded a little defensive i'm on edge cause i'm so excited yet so worried about bringing them home!! Please excuse my freak out lol:o :confuse8: |
I really dont think you can go by anything except just watch your dog and see. I got Kizzy @6 weeks too. She wasnt suppose to get over 4 lbs if that according to the breeder. It was my first and I didnt know anything about them. anyway, she weighed 1 lb when I got her at 6 week, 9 weeks she weighed 2 lbs. and seemed like she gained a lb at least every 2 to 3 week. she wont be 5 months till July 3 and she weighs little over 6 lbs now and maybe close to 7. She still isnt all that big and hasnt seemed to have grown much if any this month. But seeing her everyday is hard to tell. She does have small bones and structure. But I just dont know if she took a growing spurt all at once and quit for good or if she'll take another growing spurt later. So i've decided their like a box of chocolate. you just have to wait and see what you've got. So i've quit worrying about it and I love her as much now as I would have if she were 4 lbs. by time you see how big they will get you will love them so much it wont matter anyway. goodluck on your babies, and I'm sure you'll be happy with them no matter how big they get. And the breeder told me she wouldnt get big enough to breed,,, hmm. wonder how big she had to be for her to breed her. lol she said thats why she was selling her. Sound like bunk to me. |
lol i know thats what they all say. I have a lab and i just wanted a little lap dog not really tiny but small and the lady told me i really don't think they will get any bigger than the mom if they do and you don't like it bring them back! How in the world could you bring them back after that long you've already fallen for them and thats how they get you! |

Maybe it was a sales pitch to get you to pay a little more? Some people consider anything smaller than 5# too small to breed. I have bought 3 dogs from a breeder whose lines are totally healthy and they are all under 4#. My dogs are 4th generation under 4#. I have two puppies by the father of my dogs by my 6# female who is totally unrelated to their line. One of the puppies is 4# and the other is over 6#. This father is 3rd generation small and he is only 2.12#. Sylvia |

You keep saying you want small but not tiny - 4# IS TINY. The double/triple rule doesn't always work. Loki was 3.5 pounds at 13 weeks when we brought him home. He is 9-10lbs and skinny as can be. He's tall and long. He is a SMALL dog. We've been training for over a year and there has only been one dog smaller than him, a baby chi, in any of his classes. He still fits on my lap, in his purse/carrier thing, in his car seat, etc. Please don't freak out if your dogs are a little bigger - Yorkies are tiny dogs. You are brining home 7.5 week old dogs, you need to realize you have bigger things to worry about. Get those dogs in classes as soon as they get their shots. Yorkies NEED socialization. If you are that concerned that they will top 4.5 pounds then wait until they are older to bring them home. No one can tell you how big they are going to be at this age. Just FYI, the best breeders of ANY breed do not let their pups go until 12 weeks. There is too much socialization from mom that they miss and they are not past their imprint stages... there are too many variables. Please be careful. |

Wyatt was right at 2lbs at 8 wks and now at 11 months he is 10 - 10 1/2 lbs. It's really hard to gauge sometimes. His mom and dad both are around 6 - 6 1/2 lbs. You just never know sometimes what size they are going to be. |

If you have changed your mind about breeding and haven't had her fixed you could probably contact the breeder and tell her what has happened and ask her to change the limited registration. She might do it. Sylvia |
