Topknot advice? Boy am I having problems. I just got the beautiful bows from Connie (LawDogBows) and I've been trying to put the elastic in Kona's hair. That is not going over so hot. Advice? |
I always put in a regular elastic band in before I ut the bow band in. I get the regular elastic bands from Lawdogs and ebay. |

I also wet the hair down with a detangler and brush it up then put it in. |
Good advice about the detangler. I will have to try that....I was struggling myself last night. I got it in after 1/2 hr. and then it fell out and one of my Boxer ate Connie's lovely bow  I didn't even know it fell out of Phoebe's hair. Gotta love the furbabies. |
What does she do buck like a mule? haha Mini use to wiggle so bad now she lets me i just keep telling her how pretty she will be .And i do it everyday ..Good luck ~ |
I dont have any advice bc I have the same problem with Chloe! She does not let me put her hair up unless I want to fight with her for an hour! But Daisy will hold real still and let me do it! |
I have to do it while he's sleeping I have been unable to get a topknot in while Dylan is awake. He's such a little squirt. I just wait until he falls asleep and then I grab him and do it. So much easier when he's not trying to jerk his hair out of my hands. I'm hoping as he gets older, he'll calm down and won't mind so much. |
Oscar used to fight it too, but I kept at it and it seemed like one day he just stopped fighting. Now he just sits there and lets me put it in. As long as your gentle and it's not a painful experience for them - they'll get used to it. You might want to try letting her get used to the ponytail with a regular elastic for a couple days first before you add the bow. Keep at it though - she'll stop fighting it. |
Top Knot Scrappy and I have, well before his haircut/shave... well had an ever going barrette battle. It would seem like just a minute after it was in that he'd shake and shake till it came out. And one day I put in the rubber band and bow on top, and caught my hubby taking it out! Urrrrggg. After all the work I did, he said it looked too sissy for a boy. Whatever huh. |

I'll keep at it. Thanks for the tips. :) |
I brush them awhile, and give them little treats at each step of the grooming process... ...so they're already sort of resigned :p to sitting there and getting messed with... ...and when I get to "ponytail time", I use the thinnest little latex elastics, and (here's my big tip, lol).... ...I wrap them around my thumb and forefinger FIRST...they'll go three tight rotations....THEN I just have to "pinch" the topknot hair between those two finger, and slide the elastic on really quickly....gets it over with FAST!!! I'm sure that the elastic doesn't end up being as tight as it really needs to be, this way, but if you double the rubberbands up, it does seem to help. I have a puppy, and a 10 month old with REALLY thin hair, so sometimes it doesn't stay in long, esp. when they're just playing around the house. But we're still in topknot training. :p They are already sitting still to have it done most of the time. Oh, and of COURSE another treat and lots of praise and admiration at the end! :p |
I wait till Gracie is either sleeping or when she has just waking up and is not very hyper so she doesnt try to fight me much! That seems to be working pretty good for me! |
Thats what I do too! Lots of reward at first. Now I just say its bow time. She jumps on the stool and puts her head down and lets me out the bow in. Quote:
