I did a lot of tinkering and experimenting to figure out the best way to make them.

If I told you how to make them, I wouldn't have a business. :grin2:

it's ok i'm just new to it all i still have two weeks till i get my babies i just wanted to kill so tim and have lots ready lol i'll try to figure it out

I found this on the web and copied it some time ago. Sounds confusing, but maybe when you actually do it - it makes sense. I've bought everything I need, but haven't got around to trying it. I know many use fabric stiffener, but this doesn't mention any. Let us know how it goes.

Okay, here goes. This is how I make bows. What I do to start: Place a small rubberband on a hemastat and set aside. Take three fingers, and hold them together like a scout salute. Now holding your hand palm up, lay two colors of ribbon across your fingers starting at your ring finger, and wrap two times, ending at the edge of your index finger. Clip the ribbon on the diagonal.Slip loops off your fingers, being careful not to let them get loose. Hold them together in the middle, and fold in half carefully, taking care not to crush the ends of the loops. Take a small notch at both corners of the fold, about a third of the way in. This is to help the loops fluff out nice. Open up the fold just enough to lay the notched part across the hemostats, above the band. Take the band, twist it, and loop it over the tip of the hemostat. Flip it and pull the bottom of the band over the top of the hemostat. Take your fingers, and pull the inner loops out from the center, giving them a little twist to help them stay out. This is what the notches are for. Alternate sides and colors. Now you should have a really nice looking bow. It will take some practice, as it requires dexterity working with those little things, but they are fun to do. I have sometimes taken little bits of metallic rickarack or plastic beads and lay them on the ribbon before pulling the band over. Puts it right in the center and is so cute! Make those the length of your three fingers, not looped.

I have the regular ribbon that you see in the catalogs, and I have the thin kind that I got from the craft store that I use for the yorkie bows. For the yorkie bows I just use two fingers, and don't do the notch. Everything else is the same.

The best advice I can give is just grab some ribbon thread/embroidery floss and maybe some beads and go to town. You'll find a way that is easiest for you. I have found that clothes pins come in handy for holding the ribbon while I'm tinkering with it. Its really not that tough and they are fairly quick to make. You'll be proud of yourself when you make one you really like, try it you'll figure it out.

Also on the stiffener. What I've heard on that is to get the spray stiffener then find something to put in the loops of the bows, like pencils or dowels or something, then once you've put them in the loops spray it and let it sit until it dries.

The first type of bow is called a "tuxedo bow." It is recommended to use 2 1/4" wide ribbons for this bow. Measure one yard of 2 1/4" ribbon. Holding ribbon face up measure about one inch, twist between fingers ½ turn and measure about four inches. Fold ribbon to form a loop, making sure to hold between fingers tightly to secure. Twist ribbon again ½ turn and continue this process in the opposite direction, making a loop on the other side.

Next measure approximately three inches of ribbon to form a loop, twist ½ turn, measure three inches to form a loop on the opposite side. Take a piece of floral wire about five inches long and crisscross across the center of the bow, cinch down tightly. Trim the excess ribbon while leaving about 1/4 inch extending from beyond the wired center in front and back of the tuxedo bow. Cut off the excess wire with wire cutters. With approximately three inches of matching 5/8" ribbon, create a center loop. Hot glue this to the center of the bow and around to the back. Take a large hair barrette and hot glue to the back of the bow.

The next bow is called a "pinwheel bow." It resembles the toy pinwheels that you blow into to make them turn. It is a very attractive bow for medium to ling hair. First measure forty inches of grosgrain ribbon. Use 1 ½" or 2 1/4" ribbons for best results. Hold a four-inch strip of ribbon face up, twist ½ turn and fold over to form a loop. Measure out three inches on the opposite side to repeat the loop process. Continue this sequence until you have completed two loops on both sides of the bow. Measure out four inched of ribbon and cut. Take an 8-10" piece of floral wire and crisscross over the center of the bow, cinching down tightly. Pull one tail of the bow up and the other tail down, cut ribbon ends at a 45-degree angle. Fluff the bow by pulling up on the individual loops. Take four inches of ribbon, folding to a 7/8" wide. Hot glue this to the center of the bow and around to the back of the bow. Hot glue a large hair barrette to the back.


These two bows have many variations. You can add extra loops to make the bows larger and fuller. Or you may wish to cut back on the number of loops in the bows to make them simple but still elegant. You can also try either larger or smaller width ribbon for even more variations.

These bows are again simple and easy for anyone to make. This is however a craft that requires practice. The more you practice your bow making the better the outcome. These are great to make for the little girls in your life or maybe even to take up as a new hobby.
