dumb question I live in Tampa Florida and right now during the day it gets to 90 degrees or more. I take Napoleon out for his walk late in the afternoon (5-6ish) when it's slightly cooler, but I was wondering if it gets too unbearably hot on pavement for him to walk on? For at least half a mile? I felt the pavement yesterday and it was warm to the touch. It occurred to me yesterday a dog w/ no shoes on to protect their paws might feel too uncomfy walking on hot surface? Are dog's feet a lot more hardy than people's? Am I being paranoid? lol |
Yes , dogs feels the heat under their paws . Mine refuse to walk when the sidewalks are too hot . |
Our neighborhood is old and has lots of shade, so we don't usually have this problem. But, if we're walking somewhere where the sun is baking the pavement, I walk where she can be in grass/dirt, etc. I've read somewhere, that they can actually damage their paws walking on hot pavement. I'll try to find the info. If that's not an option for you (walking in shade or on grass) they do make cute little shoes. Or walk early in the day before the pavement heats up. |
I'm glad asked about this. I was concerned and didn't want my puppy to be hurt. I'll try not to walk him on hot pavement anymore. Maybe walk him when it's not so hot or keep him in shady areas only. |
Not a dumb question at all. Living in the city, I have often wondered about this too. Nikko hates booties so if things get too hot, I guess he won't be going outside. |
2 Attachment(s) Mitzi doesn't like hot pavement either. So I made her booties that are comfy, cheap and easy to put on: I cut the fingers off 'Brahma' gloves and fix them with an elastic band with velcro at the ends. Now she has no problems anymore and we don't have to worry about glass, stickers, bees and... and...:aimeeyork |

Cute boots! Great idea  |
Don't deny them their walks. Get up early and take them while it's cool or wait until the sun sets and take them then. Actually, if the pavement isn't too hot for the palm of your hand, it shouldn't be too hot for their foot pads. They love their walks so much! :D |

when I take Buckeye out. he will just stand there and look up at me.(meaning he wants me to carry him). so i pick him up and carry him to his favorite spot. a neighbor stopped in his car as he was passing by and yelled "that is no way for him to get his exerrcise". I just laughed and told him to reach down and feel the pavement. It was actually hot enought to burn my fingers. i am going to use your idea. thank you. and thank you serrelind for starting this thread. I think more people has to be reminded of the hot stuff . |
