Need advice!!! I am going to look at some 9 wk old yorkie puppies today. The woman I spoke with said that they are ACA registered. Should I be trying to find AKC puppies instead? Even though she raised them in her house, is this one step above a pet store? Am I being too picky? If anyone can give advice please do!!! Looking in VA JM |
I'm not an expert in AKC or ACA I just think if you like the place they grew up and you like their breeder and you like the puppies and the price is right, why not. Unless you want to breed. :aimeeyork |
If you are not planning on breeding or even if you are- as long as you don't have a problem with that registry, go for it! All registries have standards that are to be followed in regards to breed appearance. Some are pickier than others, but I don't think that makes any registry "undesirable" unless you are a breeder and you need to stick with a certain registry of your choice. If you feel comfortable purchasing a puppy from that breeder, don't let her registry choice stop you. Good luck! If you get a puppy, we want to see pictures right away!:D |

Well put! |
The Registry does not bother me especially since I have never registered any of mine. They have been strictly for pets and as long as they are healthy and to the standard to which I am looking for, I am not picky at all. AKC verses ACA does not make a healthy vs not so healthy animal and in my opinion just irrelevant. |
Thanks for the advice! We will not be breeding the dog, we just want a family pet that is not going to have major hangups. I really don't know what to expect at this woman's place. I guess I need to go with my gut feeling when I see the puppies. Will let you know. Thanks! |
I think there was a few threads on here that gives you and idea on what kind of things to look for when choosing a puppy. do a search on it and see what you come up with. I would do it for you but I have to get off here and get to work. (I am Lingering too long again). in my opinion, registering is not necessary unless you are going to show.(and I know nothing about that area either). I was not a breeder but had an accidental litter. (all fixed now). I don't consider myself a step above a pet store or a backyard breeder. I just wanted to make sure the 2 that I sold was going to very good homes and would be loved to the max. I raised mine in my home too (mostly on my lap). LOL. I even cut my price so they could be happy. this is probably not her case, but it is a thought. You are not being too pickey at all. good luck with the visit. |
Let us know how it goes! |
ACA does have guidelines and won't register just any dog as a purebreed. Many owners with limited AKC registrations to restrict breeding go to ACA because they allow the AKC parents to be registered without restricting breeding rights. I wouldn't base my decision on the registry, but on the environment, puppy and breeder. |
Okay this person did not work out. She would only let me go visit the puppies if I was going to buy them today. She is caretaker for a member of her family and doesn't really have the time. I understand that, but I am not buying without looking. Her place was relatively close and I would have gone today with my daughter and if I liked the place return with my husband at a later date. It was hard to communicate with her and questions were left unanswered. Oh well, I will keep trying. The right dog is out there for us. Maybe he or she might just find us. :aimeeyork |
