Breeder Questions  Recently visited with the breeder I thought was good and have put a small deposit on male puppy, but now not so sure. She was outside with puppies when we arrived. When we asked about other puppies in litter, she advised they were already promised and it wouldn't be fair to show us puppies we couldn't have. She indicated she lets the puppies run around the house underfoot, which concerns me that the puppies have learned to potty on floor. The puppies had sores/scabs on neck (under hair you could feel them). She said they play and drag each other around and that's how they get the sores. She said we could come in, but her house was a mess because she had not had time to do anything with it because of a dying friend. When she opened the door to go in for a minute, the odor about knocked you down. My husband said he wouldn't have gone in even if she invited us to. She seems to love the puppies, but am I right to be concerned? Do you have any advice for me about questions to ask before I absolutely go through with the purchase. I will feel so horrible not to follow through cause she's held it for me. |
i would not buy a pup from her ! |
I would not buy from someone where you could not see the mother and the father and the other siblings |
Oh and I had both my dogs as pups too and they never put sores on each other from playing. I really dont believe what she told you. |
Run, don't walk, run. |
hmm I probably wouldn't buy from her either..especially because the odor in her house..!! Hmm- does that mean she doesn't clean up after her dogs or give them baths? Ok- I understand messiness but odor is another thing. Plus why couldn't you see siblings? Yeah you know they are taken..maybe they were way cuter or in bad shape?? If she invited you to her home then you should beable to see mom, dad, and siblings if she had them.?? |
I agree, you should back out of buying a pup from her. There are too many red flags going up and if you were to buy a pup from her you may end up with alot problems. Ask if you can get your deposit back and look for a pup elsewhere. |
I'm concerned about the sores on the puppies neck. Maybe you should call the ASPCA and see if they can do a home visit. I would absolutely not buy a puppy from this breeder. Follow your gut instinct, if you are asking then you already know the answer! Good luck and maybe you'll even get your deposit back. |
Thanks for all advice. Does anyone know of a good breeder in WV, OH, VA, NC or SC. I'm willing to travel to these states to get a good breeder and a good puppy. Thanks again and God Bless. |
Oh my goodness I have heard and read alot about this. My Daisy Had a litter they are four weeks old and I clean everything I have already gave them a bath which my hubby didn't agree with. All my yorkies are inside and outside train wee pads or walking them. I would try to get my money back, and I also call animal control and report this, what I have read it sounds like a puppy mill I could be wrong. But around here that's what's it is called. |
This sounds like bad news to me. If I were you, I would take my search elsewhere. You have mentioned so many things that set of alarms for me. Even if you lose the deposit, its worth it if you ask me. |
Great advice from an experienced group of Yorkie lovers! |

I agree especially about the deposit too. If you get a pup from this lady chances are you'll be spending a lot more in vet bills and/or heartbreak :( |
sores Take it from along time breeder..sores and scabs do not come from pups playing with each other, no mater how rough they get.....it is usually fleas or mites or both...!!! |
Everything about this situation would send up RED FLAGS to me...There is a show breeder called Prestigious Yorkies in your area, I think. I do not know them at all but I have seen their dogs in TYTM when they have won awards and they are lovely. Show kennels sell their puppies that are not show quality (most in a litter are good pet quality) for reasonable prices... As I said, I do not know them but the pics of their dogs are lovely... |
