Fighting Yorkies Hey Everyone, I am having a problem. Recently my puppies have been fighting. Gixxer is 4 months and male. America is 3.5 months and female. We have had gixxer since he was 10 weeks old. Then three weeks later we got america. We recently moved to a larger house and a yard for them to play in. They play nice most of the time. But lately america has started to snap at gixxer. She dominates the food dish. This evening we gave them dinner. After they ate the entire plate we added alittle more. Gixxer went to the living room. When he returned america was just staring at the plate. Gixxer went to smell the plate and she growled and snapped at him. I have a feel ing they are trying to establish the alpha role. But how do I let them know I am the Alpha male in this house? And how do I keep the peace? My normally happy little man is becoming timid. He has even started to cower around me, and I don't try to scare theminto listening. Ron Harding |
You might want to separate them for part of the day if the fighting is too severe. My two fight too but neither one cowers and they only fight occasionally usually over a toy they both want. Good luck that is a tough situation I hope you can find a solution. |
seperate them when they eat |
Yes, seperate them when they eat. My Tucker can be possessive but they do not eat together and I monitor when they get the nylabone so Tripp doesn't get scared or snapped at. |
I agree - each dog should have their own bowl of food and they should be fed in different areas of the room - not next to each other. I have 10 Yorkies and everyone gets their own corner and they have learned to go to their own spot for their food. :) |
you know...I bet I am probably doing this wrong...but .. when we eat around here in the mornings, I take a fist full of food and throw it across the tiled floor. they all eat at the same time and of course buckeye wants his on the couch beside me (while I drink my coffee). that is only their breakfast. the other meals are taken from a bowl. one will eat while the others wait and they take their turns. |
mine are never aggressive to each other until it is food time. They all 4 have a separate corner of the room for eating... Tootie is the smallest of them all and the "Yellow Lab" is the largest but he sure is the theif among them all. I taught all of mine from the beginning not be food aggressive and that helps alot but I think it is a natural reaction... Tootie will lay in the middle of the floor and whine at all of the others.. LOL - he is TOO CUTE! |
A lot of dogs are very possessive about their food - and will bite or snap at anything or anyone who gets near their bowl. This really is a bad form of aggression and one that should be stopped. I'm sure you've seen Animal Planet when they test dogs to see which ones are adoptable. And - not being aggressive with their food is one of the first things they look for. I'm sure some good books or information on the Internet can help you with this..... I have the opposite problem with my Bichon (21 pounds). He drops all his food for the Yorkie. My Yorkie would be willing to share. But, the Bichon thinks the Yorkie just has to have everything.....and always eat first. Good luck! Carol Jean |
