Anyone put thier dogs on a treadmill? I was wondering if anyone has used a treadmill for thier dogs? If so how did you get them to walk on it? |
Tried once with it barely moving - Bailey just slid off onto the floor. I'm not very persistent about some things. Twice on the floor and I decided that wouldn't be an exercise alternative for Bailey. |
We LOVE our treadmill! I have a treadmill and my Chattie and Peppy both LOVE to walk on it! Peppy, the little sweetie that he is will hop on the tread mill and sit down and look at me while I'm sewing as if to say, "Come on, Mommy, let's go for a walk." We always start off very slowly so that they can get their footing secure (about .9 miles per hour, a snails' pace) and then gradually move it up to a maximum of 2.0 miles per hour when Peppy is on board (he is very small 3.8 lbs.). I let Peppy walk for about .25 mile and then slow it back down for a "cooldown" for Peppy. Then I pick Peppy up and he gets to "ride" while Chattie and I crank the treadmill up to about 2.5 mph (still slow) for another .25 mile. When we get back down cooldown speed, Peppy gets to walk some more. It takes some time and effort and a lot of patience to teach them, but it is GREAT. It works for us, we live in the country on a narrow cruvy road where people drive way too fast and many folks let their dogs roam free. |

I am so very excited about the Tradmill! Any time I get on the treadmill they just hop on and wait for me to turn it on. When I was training them I would sit down beside the treadmill on the floor, turn it on as slow as I could make it operate, and support them with one hand on each of their sides. It took three short training sessions before I was able to walk with them. The first few walks were taken with harnesses on both the kids but not the harnesses are not necessary. When I do use harnesses, though, I use the Silk Step-In's that I make. I always walk with them, We do the Cesar's Way walk .... I am ALWAYS in front, and both Chattie and Peppy have their own self selected "spot" on the treadmill. I really need to get a rear view mirror because I keep my neck turned around so I can keep a constant eye on them. btw.... Chattie is sitting on it now looking longingly at me.....Mom, get off YT and let's go for a WALK! |
I cannot stress enough how important it is to be viligent when using treadmills with Yorkies (or any dog) and watch for signs of stress. It should be a happy time.... not a forced march:D |
Thanks for the great tips...I thought this might be a great alternative when we cannot get outside for a walk. Its starting to get really hot and I go to work really early in the morning. I also read Cesars book and since I started exercising both my boys I can tell a difference in thier behavior and my behind :D |
Mini and I have been on the treadmill together took her a few trys but she can walk with it at a slow speed ..not unlike myself haha ..but i have to say its kinda hard because its not realy wide enough for her to walk beside me ..and that is what she likes . |
