What would you do?!
 

We are getting our 2nd yorkie on Sunday...a baby girl...and I am having a hard time deciding what I am going to do with her during the day. We live in an apartment, so not only do we want what is best for the puppy, but we don't want either dog to bark. Hobbs, the yorkie we have now, is 8 months old, fully potty trained, and gets free run of the house during the day at the moment. He does not bark when he has free run of the house. These are the 2 options I am considering:

1. Put her in a large wire crate with her bed, pee pad, food, and water. Let Hobbs continue to have free run of the house.
Advantage(s): It is a small space where she'll feel secure, she won't chew anything up, she won't potty everywhere.
Drawback: She and/or Hobbs might bark bc they want to play with each other or bc she wants to get out.

2. Put Hobbs and the new puppy in the kitchen together with a baby gate or x-pen.
Advantage over the crate: She will have the companionship of Hobbs (I am not the least bit worried that he would hurt her).
Drawback(s): I am not sure if it is a small enough space in order for her to feel really secure, and Hobbs will probably bark bc he wants out since he's used to having free run of the house.

So, I'm taking a poll....which one do you think is best?! Or, if you have another suggestion, PLEASE share!

I would continue to leave your older dog in the routine he is used to. If you shut him up he may view it has punishment & associate that with the new puppy & you may have behavior problems. The new puppy is gonna rock his world the way it is so I would try to keep as many of his other things the same if possible.

I would like to help you but since I've never been put in that situation , I am no help unless you want to bring me the new little girl and I'll just keep her. lol

I wouldn't take the freedom away from the older yorkie. He wouldn't understand and you may cause behavioral issues with him.

Thanks everyone for all your responses! :D I guess the best thing for us to do would be to keep her in a crate.

Would it be okay to keep the crate in our room with the door shut so Hobbs cannot get to her and torment her through from outside the crate?

I really dont know what is best in this situation since I only have one Yorkie. I guess you can try both situation and stay outside to see how the pups do. Good luck. I wanted to say congratulations on the new pup. Can't wait to see pics. ;) :)

During the day I have advantage of taking Kali to work with me while she is still young. But when we have errands to run at home. We leave Kobe out with free roam (that is what he was used to). And Kali is put in her crate with her bed, food, & water. She will cry a little at first but then she just goes to sleep.

Do you keep the crate in the same room where Kobe has free roam? Or do you put the crate in a separate room so Kobe cannot get to it?

I would put the new pup in a crate or x-pen in the area you want hin to be and leave your other Yorkie to free roam. The older one will visit the pup here and there to keep him company.This is what I did with my cats and pup.They slept on a chair next to the x-pen.
