get irritated toes sometimes? Coco has this one toe that she licks and licks until it gets red. I took her to the vet last time and she gave me antibiotic ointment for it. I am using it now but I'm just curious if anyone else has had this problem before. I wonder if it's the grass at my complex? I have no idea. The vet even thought that it might have been something that got stuck in her toe but she checked and nothing. I feel bad for her because she hates having a bandaged foot. I only bandage her up for 10 minu. so she doesn't lick the ointment. Once it dissolves in her skin I take it off but my poor baby is licking it like crazy.

I have occassionally caught Nikko chewing on his feet. Most times he chews on his nails. He isn't allergic to anything, I think his feet just get itchy sometimes. But he has never gotten as irritated as your little girl. I hope she feels better and give her a big hug and kiss from Nikko and me.:)

Thanks! She feels fine and she is perfectly content licking her foot, but I feel like it must be itching for her to be licking it. It's gentle licks, no chewing but the skin is a bit red. She's happy go lucky until the ointment and bandage go on, then she gives me the sad I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID THIS TO ME look :rolleyes:

Mac and Mellie will do it from time to time. I notice it's usual right around the time to go to the groomer.

Maya my Pom does that all the time. The vet gave me some pads to wash her feet with and a liquid to put on and then an ointmnet. It clears up for awhile and then she starts licking it again. Otherwise she is fine.

your dog can be licking its feet for a couple reasons. One, there is something stuck in the pad or between its toes. Two your dog has an allergy to something they are walking on. It could be grass, some type of pollen that is around now, the cleaning agent you use on your floors or something else that got tracked into the house. Three, your dog is bored. If you've ruled out the other two by taking them to the vet, then you can usually count on this being your answer. If there doesn't seem to be anything bothering your dogs foot and you notice this is a constant all year round thing your dog is trying to tell you something. Many dogs will do this compulsive foot licking and it eventually irritates the foot and turns the fur red (there is something in their saliva and tears that do this). To stop is you can distract your dog with something else right when it begins to lick, you can always make sure there are lots of toys around for your dog to play with, and if its really bad your dog might have to wear an e-collar for a little bit to get ride of the irritation and then you might have to try wrapping the foot until your dog finally forgets about it. The constant licking isn't good becasue even if your dog is just bored and there is nothing really wrong with the foot, he can cause there to be something wrong. The foot will become red and irritated and then it can become infected.

Wow thanks for this great info. Yea she doesn't do it AS much during the day when I'm home because she's usually distracted. But at night, she likes to sleep on my pillow with me and all I hear is SWISH SWISH, and I look and she is licking her toe, it's always the same one. Within days it becomes all red and irritated. The vet checked her whole foot and pads with the magnifying glass and said there wasn't anything stuck. I am going to stop taking her on the grass for a week or so to see if she stops. I have no idea but I notice it's mostly at night when we're winding down.
