Afraid of water bowl HELP We started noticing about a week ago that Sophie is afraid of her water bowl. She would spin around by her bowl like she didn't have water even though she did. So we would take her bowl rinse it and give her fresh water from the fridge. She would drink it but only if the bowl is really full and she would stretch way out to reach it. I don't know what has happened. She has been drinking and eating out of stainless steel bowls for about a year now. Our vet recommended them. I am wondering if she is seeing her reflection and that is what is making her afraid. I am worried that she is not drinking all that she needs because she is afraid. I was wondering if it would be ok to let her drink her water from a ceramic bowl instead? I would appreciate any help you could give me. Oh yeah she is not afraid to eat out of stainless steel. |
Im not sure what to do about that. My girls were afraid of their food bowl, but that was an easy fix, they eat off of a plate now! LOL! Yorkies are the pickiest little things arent they. Im not sure what to suggest on water, bc you cant put water on a plate! |
Maybe you could go and get a 5$ bowl from foodlion or petsmart that is plastic and see how she does with it. Crystal |
Princess did the same thing. She has so many water bowls. For her it depends on what kind of day she's having. I think she likes her glass bowl best. Talk about picky!!!!!! |
it would most likely help to let her drink out of a ceramic bowl, just make sure you clean it often so it stays clean |
So you all think it is ok to let her drink out of a ceramic bowl? I was just concerned because the vet said stainless but I would think if I wash it everyday that it should be fine. I am really concerned she is not drinking enough. Thanks |

LOL! Sophie used to be afraid of her food bowl but she finally got used to it. It amazes me at the things they notice. Most dogs would eat food off of anything.:) |
They sell water bottles like the ones you would put in a small animal cages, just larger for dogs. I have one for Lady for when shes in her crate cause I didn't want to put a water bowl in there with her incase she spills it all over. That might help. |
Abby was the same way. I put a smaller plastic bowl inside and now she's fine with it. Both of them will not drink out of a clear glass bowl. |
My Howie has days where he just doesn't want to use his water dish. We accidentally discovered that he likes drinking out of people glasses. That's right.. we get a plastic cup and fill it up to the top with water and he'll drink for as long as he can still get his little nose in. I know it's not a daily solution, but it works when we know he really needs water. |

I don't know if Sissy drinks out of her water bowl in her room or not, since when she is in there, we are not. She does drink out of our other dog's water bowl which is in an elevated stand (quite high for her actually). She will also follow me into the bathroom which is the cue that she wants a drink, so I take a bathroom dixie cup, fill it to the top and she'll drink what she wants. |
Coco doesn't care either way. She has ceramic bowls at my parents' house and stainless steel at home. She does totally fine with the ceramic bowls. Poor little Sophie, how traumatizing it is to your reflection..hehe to cute  |

can be cleaned with hot soapy water 2x a day after each feeding. Also they can be put in the dishwasher once a week for extra cleaning. I like how they shine after each cleaning. We eat off of china, samething. Easy to keep clean and sanitary. Would never use plastic! |
