Yorkies' Teeth I am interviewing vets right now. I asked one how much it cost to clean a dog's teeth. I also stated that I was contemplating purchasing a three year old Yorkie. The lady at the vet's office said it was hard to believe that a three year old dog would need its' teeth cleaned. Do you agree with this, and how often do you clean your dog's teeth? My thinking is that the breeder who is selling this dog, probably does not brush its' teeth, but I could be entirely wrong. Thanks. Kate |
The vet tech is wrong! You should get her teeth cleaned once a year or so. Yorkies generally don't have great teeth and they need good dental care. Also, rope toys are good for their teeth--they are like floss when they chew on them! I hope you love this special baby girl o much! Can't wait to see pictures! :) |
Thank you. I know that one of their major problems can be their teeth, and knee joints. I hate to think of doing this annually, as I know they can die from being anesthesized. :( Kate Quote:

Eensor is correct. They need annual cleanings at least. I have had some that needed it 2 times a year. You will need to find out if the vet is in agreement with the misinfo his tech is giving out. If not, let him know what you were told. The placque on a dog's teeth can cause heart valve infections and lead to heart failure.. |
Thank you. I want to be sure this is done right. :) Kate Quote:

teeth For some reason my males need their teeth cleaned more often then the girls...Charlotte is 6 in May and never had hers done..they are lovely. Her daughters are perfectly white at 3 yrs...but Whiz needs his done all the time. I bought some vet recommended gel to prevent tartar and it is working quite well. I also think a smaller Yorkie mouth gets tartar sooner...there is so little space in there. |
Yorkierose , Could you please tell me the name of the gel to prevent tartar ? |
gel This product came from the "Doggie Dentist"..so I decided to try it...Maxi/Guard..use daily,,it seems to have loosen the tartar on Whiz' teeth adn I can scrpae it off..with the girls it is suppose to stop build up, which seems to be doing. I am sure most regular vets carry it..just thought he dog dentist might know the best product. |
My yorkie poo is about 5 months now and her teeth look really healthy. Do i still need to brush them? She eats dry dog food which i hear is good for their teeth, knaws on bones and she has a rope too...which helps her teeth? |
It is not bad to brush them everyday . Help them to be white and healthy . |
Well Sydney is open to alot of things but for some reason she just refuses to let me brush her teeth, she is almost like a little kid, she wants to do it herself I guess but for some reason the concept of not being able to hold the brush she is not getting. For our poodle (passed away 3 years ago) the Vet gave us a spray that we put on her teeth, and then used a cloth or papertowel to wipe the teeth and it was as good as brushing. That vet retired now I can't remember the name (sometimers kicking in) does anyone know what it is called. Its not a gel its a spray? |
