When to top knot and what to do until then? I feel so bad for Gracie. Her hair is in her eyes but it's NOT long enough to put in a top knot yet? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! |
1 Attachment(s) Sissy's hair is not long enough for a top knot, but I do a little ponytail (straight up) with a band and when she let's me a bow. I think it looks adorable. |
I put Cali's in a little pony tail too. Even now that it is real long I keep in ponytail not a topknot |
GREAT. I will try a little ponytail. Thanks so much! |
lexi's hair is that length now and i put in in a ponytail now and right in front of the ponytail i put in a plastic barrett.. |
What's the difference between a topknot and a ponytail? |

Use your YT "Search" under topknot and there are lots of threads that show photos and tell you how to do it (since I'm not sure how to attach the link). Your pup needs pretty long hair to do it. |
Kizzys hair is just now long enough on top for me to get a pretty good pony tail. I put a scrunchie around it several times then I put a bow with a barrett up their by clipping it around the scrunchie or in between the scrunchie loops i've made. |
You already got great help - here is a site that shows topknot help with longer hair - http://www.yorkies4me.com/topknots.htm I omit the Double bands - but it gives you a visual on how to do one...I call them both ponytails AND topknots - it's basically the same thing I think Till then - move the 'topknot' closer forward on the head to catch that hair - and just take a little up.....you should be able to gather enough so the hair isn't hanging in the eyes...Also - don't make it too tight - and not too loose....:) You'll get it - just takes practice. |
I've seen a picture on here of someone (sorry, can't recall who it was) who had used those miniature 'claw' clips for human hair on their dog to pull back the bangs. This would be good to hold back hair that isn't quite long enough to get into a topknot or if you can't get her to sit still long enough to put the elastic in for a ponytail. |

I like that site, it gave a better view of how to assemble a "topknot". I agree, I call them the say thing. |
It doesn't say what we give to our dogs to get them to sit still while we do this to them!!!! hee-hee;) Karen |

I would advise using laytex bands and use them myself - but they dont sell them in most stores - they seem easier to remove than rubber. and Janice ...I've used the claw clips - they work better on thicker hair - with Cheri - she twisted hers around and it pulled her hair - I felt so bad - with Chanel - they stayed in all day....I guess it's all a matter of what works for what hair type... |
1 Attachment(s) Here is a Claw Clip - I was playing around with Cheri when I first got her - I didn't leave it in - but it was soooooooooo cute on her little tiny head.... From personal experience - young puppies don't do well with these - too easy to remove and chew up. |
Kali is 12 wks. old and I have only been successful once in getting a bow in her hair. And it was one with a barrett attached. How do you get them to sit still long enough to put a band in ? |
i put lexi on my kitchen counter with a handful of cheerios. whala its on... |

Oscar used to wriggle like crazy, but I kept at it... I wouldn't give up. One day, it seemed like he just stopped - resigned to the fact that I was going to do it regardless I guess! Now he sits there and lets me put it in no problem. At night, when I put him up in my bed, he comes over to me to take his ponytail out - it's become routine now. Just keep at it - treats are always a good reward of course! |
I just put Kizzy in my lap and tell her to be still and i give her a few cheerios but mostly one at the start and a few afterwards. But i've also offered to get the fly swatter. lol. She is scared to death of it. She has seen me swat flies on the deck with it and look at her and say see what the fly swatter does. I can tell her to spit stuff out (like a paper towel, kleenex if I drop one, she tries to grab it and run). I just say, i'll get the fly swatter and she will run from me but while running she spits it out and keeps going. all i have to do is just tell her that, I dont even have to pick it up most of the time. so sometimes while doing her bow if she dont be still I'll just say" Imma get my fly swatter. no more moving her head much at all. then afterwards I say look at me and she will look me right in the face so I can see if I got it straight. it better be pretty straight cause once I put her on the floor she's not gonna give me a chance to get her back in my lap for a while. But she acts like she really thinks she is actually pretty afterwards. I'll tell her aww you look so pretty and go on about it and say go get a toy and play. she wont even run after her toys for a while. she'll just sit on the rug and look at me like, i'm too pretty to do that. But she does know what get a toy means because I tell her that all the time when she is on my heels so much and she will go get one of her toys and start playing with it. but not when she first gets her bow in. |
