At What Age Are Yorkies Not Playful Anymore? My aunt is looking for a female Yorkie that's not a baby, but she still wants the pup to be playful. Play with toys and such. About what age do you think they grow out of it? Do you think a two year old would still be playful? I mean, Baby is 9 months and is still playful obviously. :p I'm just wondering at what age do they get tired of that? Any comments, stories, etc. will be appreciated. :D Thanks! |

Jazzie is 8 years old and still plays like a puppy! Since she's my first yorkie, I don't know for sure but in general most terriers stay energetic and playful for most of their life. They are bred to chase rodents so they have the high energy level that is part of being a terrier. I hope Jazzie doesn't grow out of it - ever!:D |
from what i hear, they don't really grow out of it! i'm trying to picture myself as an old lady trying to keep up with my pups! omega |
My 10-year-old little mixed breed was very playful - as is my 5-year-old Bichon. I think a lot of their being playful is whether or not they have someone to play with -- and are encouraged to play. If I want to get down and play - my dogs (all ages) are ready to go. And - they play a lot together also. Good luck! Carol Jean |
I also think it is the terrier in them that won't ever let them tire out! |
Bailey is a year and a half and I thought he hadn't changed, that was until we got Morgan. Bailey is MUCH more mellow now than I now remember he was as a puppy. He is a cuddler and likes to play on occassion. I'm not sure if this is common for all Yorkies but in my case I would say he is now at that perfect age and stage. |
Jasper and Angel both played Angel was 11 when she passed, and she was still very playful right up to the last day. I don't think they ever stop. Jasper slowed down, but I think it was because he was ill. |
I WISH Edie would slow down a bit. She is 6 year old. I woke up at 3 a.m. and she was standing on my chest with a frisbee, trying to get me to play. She also spends hours pushing a ball around the house. People are so surprised when they hear she is not a puppy. |
I have a 2 yr. old and a 3 yr. old. Both of them are very playful. However, what I have noticed at this age is that they are able to have downtime too. So along with the playfulness that we all love, I still get my cuddly lap time with them too! |
It really depends on how they were raised. Muffin played all of her 14 years. If you adopt one that has never been played with much, it might not want to play. But if you adopt one that has had someone play with it all of its life, then that yorkie will continue to play the rest of its life. |

Wow everyone. That's really great to hear. My aunt really wants a Yorkie, but I told her she would be better with a pup that wasn't a tiny puppy. They are TONS of work. And I don't want her to have to worry about hypoglycemia either. I'm looking for one for her that's Baby's age (9 months) or a little older around a year or so (maybe a tad bit older). She really wants someone to cuddle with and play with b/c she loves how Baby always plays with her. This will really be great for her b/c she needs companionship BIG time! :aimeeyork |
