What to do after neuter????Advice please
 

Ok, I take Tank to be neutered in the morning and I don't pick him up until wednesday afternoon. What do I need to expect? Is there anything that the vet may not tell me that I would need to know or look for in case of infection?

Also, since I won't be picking him up until the next day, will he be back to normall or should he still be grogy? Should I keep him from running and jumping on the couch?

Thanks for the help, sorry these are my fist pups and I just don't know what to expect and sometimes vet's don't give you all the info you need.

I know how you feel! I was freaking out when I got Hobbs fixed. After the surgery, you need to watch his incision to make sure it doesn't get infected. My vet told me it was fine for them to lick it some, but not too much. If it gets red, then put a little neosporin on it. If the neosporin doesn't help, then take him back to the vet so he/she can take a look at the incision. Also, you want to prevent them from going up and down stairs and from jumping on or off the couch for at least a couple days after the surgery.

Do you know if your vet is using an IV or just gas?? I know with gas they wake up immediately after the surgery and with an IV they stay groggy for a little while. But, he should not be groggy when you pick him up on Wednesday. You may want to ask your vet if there is going to be someone at the vet Tuesday night to monitor the dogs there. I know that Hobbs was supposed to stay overnight, but I convinced my vet to let me take Hobbs home the day of his surgery bc there wasn't going to be anyone at the vet that night to monitor him. My vet told me that the reason he makes them spend the night after surgery is bc they need to be confined and not active (no stairs, no jumping on/off couches, etc). But I assured my vet that I would keep Hobbs from being active, so he let me take Hobbs home same day. I just didn't want something to happen to Hobbs when he spent the night and no one be at the vet to see! So, you might want to check into that. Even when I picked Hobbs up the same day of his surgery, he was perfectly fine...he never even acted like he had surgery! Needless to say, it was somewhat of a chore to get him to say settled down and not be active!

Cooper was neutered last Thursday. I got to pick him up on Thursday afternoon. He was awake, but kinda "out of it" when we picked him up. His eyes had a glazed over look, but he was excited to see us. They gave us 5 pain pills to give him..for pain and to keep him sedated, as he was not supposed to jump or get excited. We gave him one that evening with his dinner (which he ate just fine) and he slept most of the evening. He would wake up and kind of pace around, not himself at all...we felt so bad for him. Then the next morning, he was back to his normal self. I didn't give him anymore pills, as he didn't seem to be in any pain and they made him so dopey...I think the pills made him feel bad. Cooper's stitches were just on the inside, so we don't have stitches that can be seen, just a small little red line, and then his little ball sack was super swollen and red the first day...but then went way down the next day and was just bruised looking. I had bought him a onesie (like babies wear) just in case he wanted to lick at the area, but he didn't do that. Cooper was also microchipped and that area didn't seem to be sore at all, and it is just the tiniest little bump. Hope this helps, if you have any more questions, I'll help with what I can from our experience.

Thanks for the help. I just dropped him off at the vet and I'm at work now..... I'm going to miss seeing him for a whole night..... Lucy is probly going crazy wondering where her brother is...

when tye and zac were done (both on the same day) i picked them up a few hours later they were a bit sleepy but not bad as my vet wont let the dog go home untill hes sure they are ok, i was told to not let them jump about and the vet gave me a head collar to put on them to stop them licking it, they were back to normal the next day.
