I would find another VET asap. I have 1 girl spayed as it was nessessary to say her from years of grief. I bought her with a sick uteris and had no choice but all my other girls are intack. If i wish to breed them i can but i think they are quite happy to not have a razor slicing them open for now just to satisfiy a VETS want. That Vet has a Screw LOOSE to demand such from you. Dont be pushed by a Vet remember they are not always right** Example> Last night a friend called with a mommy in labor i told them i'm on my way. Got there and new the baby was stuck rushed her to a ER clinic and insisted the VET c-section her asap. I instructed the VET (NOT) to pull on that puppy as he would kill it. DID HE LISTEN ??
NOPE and broke its neck. Now dead puppy and hearts broken all to an DEAF VETS that had no ability to follow the wished of the owners and i. Very sad but common place and if you find a VET who will listen to your wishes and not force theres on you KEEP-HIM there like gold.

I have to disagree with the crowd here. We certainly aren't in a position to make such broad assumptions about her vet's opinion. He may be taking into consideration issues that we all are not aware of. Perhaps they are not of a fit size/structure/soundness to make breeding a feasible option and spay may be in the best interest of the dog's health. His bedside manner could have been less combative, but he may have had good reason to broach the subject so strongly.

It is a decision I think should be left to each individual, we had two dogs spayed through the years, our Dobie had bladder problems afterward and so did a Poodle. We have chosen not to spay Baby Blessing when I took her to the vet last week for her Micro chip, he asked me if we was going to spay her, he proceeded to go on about all the things that could happen since we were choosing not to. I then told him of our two past experience of bladder damage from spaying each by different vets, that was something each pet had to live with (as well as ourselves) one for 14 years and one for 15 years. ( By the way both females and we being careful pet owners saw to it that they were never bred.) His comment, there are risks to every procedure, and of course risk of anethesia to spay her if we so decided. We had Cassie for almost eleven years she was only three and half pounds, we didn't have her spayed, she was our baby and never would have let her breed, in the end it looks like she passed from the Canine Virus. Which is an air borne disease. I just wish you the best what ever you decide. Patti

But he should explain why he feels you should spay her. And also I don't understand him saying that if you don't, you need to find another vet. I talked over Oscar's neuter with my vet. My breeder had wanted to use him for stud and he and I discussed this. Oscar's bite was off at the time and he felt this reason enough not to breed him. I respected his opinion and had him neutered. His bite is pretty darn good now but that is neither here nor there anymore. I am glad I had him neutered. If I were you, I would dig a little deeper and get his reasoning behind his opinion that you should have her spayed.

Then he should explain these issues with her instead of giving her an ultimatum. I do not feel that is professional. Even though the vet may feel strongly about his decision to spay, it is still left up to the owner. That's just my HO.

It seems to me we dont have the entire story, its difficult to believe a vet would not explained his reasons. Whether he is against breedering in general due to over population issues, perhaps she is not of breed standard, proper brood bitch health or structure. I would suggest another visit or phone call would be in order, opening up the line of communication and listen to his reasons, Vet relationships are valuable and hard to come by if youre comfortable with him and the care is has been giving your girls.

My first reaction was, "get a new vet". But I had not thought of this. Did he give a reason as to why he felt she should not be bred?

I was once a vet tech and kind of know why he feels you should spay your pet. It helps prevent mammory tumors from developing later in life - for one thing. My sister in-law's dog ended up with this and we operated, but didn't get it all - too much tro get them all out and if you don't get all of it and the air gets to it (during the opening of the operation) - it spreds quickly and that is what happened. It was such a sad story - very nice dog and sad my sister in-law had to go through it.
2nd - it stops them from having their heats so no more bleeding.
And third he was probably thinking of ~ no accidents of her getting pregnant and getting a call - what do I do now!
Not to mention any faults the dog may have and would pass on to other pups or she may be too small to breed. These are all just a few reasons to spay a dog. Yes, call him again and ask him to explain for you. This way you will know for sure his reason.

I would educate myself first. Read and research all about this yourself first and then decide for yourself. A vet should not make that decisiion for you and yes he should have explained further why he felt this way. If you decide not to spay her - change vets and research and get references before going to a new vet. There is nothing harder than trying to find a vet that fits you and best for your babies. Remember - that vets are just people too.
