Brushing . . . What kind of tips can you give me on brushing? I'm making progress, but anything that can move us along better will be appreciated. At first, Bailey didn't like brushing at all. I started waiting until she was half asleep and brushing her as much as possible. I could only get her back and the top of her head without a struggle. I still do most of her brushing when she's very tired, since she is more cooperative, and she is gradually getting to where I can brush more of her, but it's still a battle to finish the job. If there's anything that can be done to progress any quicker, bring it on! |
I think what you are doing is great! I don't know what to say to get things going faster. Sometimes slow is better. |
sounds like you are doing a pretty good job as is. just make sure when you run into a tough spot to do it gently and talk gently as you brush. I used to start out by rubbing the tummy. then introduce the brush slowly. mine all love being brushed now. they push each other off my lap to be the one brushed. in the beginning I thought Ahia would never settle down to be brushed. just got to keep working at it. they soon like it. At least mine do. |
I had always tried to brush Topher when he and I were snuggling on the bed or onthe sofa, but he always fought me. Once I tried doing it while he was on the table, it was a piece of cake. His breeder must have done it that way...also he's been to the groomer about 4 times now (he's 8 months old), so he's used to being groomed that way by her. So that's what I do...I get all of his things together, put him onthe table and he settles down right away and I can get it done. Hubby is going to make me a grooming arm (one that clamps onto the table) so I can have that extra hand that's sometimes needed. |
I clicker trained my little girl. every time I touched her with the brush she got a click and a treat. Then it was at the end of the stroke, click and treat, then after two strokes of the brush, and so on and so forth (I built this up over several sessions). Then I taught her to "stand" so I could do her legs. brushing the legs required more clicking - but we're there! And as for that really scary bottle of "ice on ice" leave in conditioner that goes "Psst" in a really scary way. First she got a click for just listening to the "psst" then she got a click for a spray on her ... you get the picture. |
