How long can I leave my Yorkie alone?

Belle isn't fully potty trained, but she'll go in the same spots, so all we do is put down puppy pads in those spots. Her potty breaks aren't really my concern, it's just the loneliness factor :(

this was my problem as well! when i first got oreo, i was with him constantly 24/7. until i started working full time i was gone almost 9 hours a day :( , but my boyfriend would be at my house to take care of him, clean up after him, feed him.. and my brothers would always be home to check up on him.

but he got really lonely i could tell, so i bought Ginger, and although i don't leave them alone (they stay at my boyfriends house when i'm at work) .. they are so happy together, that when i do leave them to go shopping/run errands for a few hours, they are still happily playing with each other. and to be honest if i could i'd get another one! so i could rotate playing with them! lol

Stomper is home 10 hours a day alone - Monday through Friday. He is fine. Adjusted very well since he has been alone like that since we got him. We just give him TONS of love when we get home. He does great alone. Just needs tons of toys and music!

My Rylee is home all day alone too, but we make up for it at night and on weekends. She is perfectly fine.

Bella is home 6 hrs a day by herself M-F and doing well. We do have two indoor cats that keep her busy. We put her in the kitchen with baby gates. She has her food, water and a house inside there along with lots of toys.

She does go a little crazy when we get home since she is so excited!!

I think Bella will be fine, if you keep her isolated, so she doesnt get into trouble, they usually sleep alot, when not stimulated. Safe toys, water and food, and her pee pee pads. I have heard a radio is good for noise for pups, that way they dont miss you as much.

thanks for your advice, all. I guess i just needed some reassurance that she could be kept at home alone and be okay! tomorrow is her first long day alone, so i'll make sure to give her lots of love tonight and tomorrow. :D

How old was he when you started leaving him home alone 10 hours a day? Do you leave him in his playpen? I only crate him at night and he's already holding it for 7 hours at 10 weeks old.

He's trained to pee on the pee-pads and I have the plastic pee pad holder so he can't rip it out and eat it.

I am planning on adjusting his 3 meals to 6:15am, 5:15pm, and 9:00pm when he reaches 4 months old. I go to bed at 11pm.

I hope that she isn't given full run of the house while you are away, this actually makes a dog more nervous, and can lead to trouble. I would use an x-pen, or put her crate in the bathroom, where she can come and go at will. This way you can be fairly certain she won't find cords to chew on. Give her some chewing toys, and many people recommend the toys that you can add kibble to, and they work to get their food.

On work days I leave the house around 7am to drop the kids off at daycare and then get to work by 8am. I bring the pups out as soon as I wake up and before I leave the house. When my husband gets up he walks them again before leaving and then comes home in between to let them out. Last week, it was raining and they hate going out in the rain so I put their crate in my daughter's bathroom with the door open and then left their food, water and put wee wee pads all over the floor and then closed the bathroom door. They were fine all day. They went on the pads. I got home around 5:30pm. My husband did come home to check up on them but even if he hadn't I think they would have been okay anyway.

As long as she has her needs met w/water/food/pee pads, she should be fine...I've always worked, since I got Apple, and she's had to stay by herself for about 8 1/2 hrs. a day...I used to keep her in the kitchen (gated), but now she has the living room/dining room/kitchen and entry hall...The ONLY think is you have to really "baby proof" the room...For me, I have to throw the breaker switch on the plugs in the living room/dining room...I just swtiched them all off and on, 'till I found the right one, and voila, I switch it off in the morning, and switch it on in the evening...It's a "just in case" thing, as she doesn't chew electrical cords, but'cha never know w/these babies...Btw, I, totally, spend every possible waking hour w/her on my day off, and I walk her 30 minutes in the morning, before work, and 30 minutes in the evening, after work...Sometimes I don't feel like it, but it sure does help her w/her exercise, energy level, etc. etc. etc...Hope this helps...

I was reading this forum and thankful for all you wonderful people on here! I am going to be getting my Yorkie this Thursday she is 13 weeks old this will be my first Yorkie and I too was wondering what I would do when I have to run errands or be gone from her. I am a stay at home Mom and I have a home photography studio so I should be here most all the time but there is a couple days I will be gone running errands and taking my sons places and could be gone for around 4-7 hrs. I just hate the thought of leaving my puppy alone for very long it breaks my heart and I have'nt even gotten her yet and already worried! Any advice for a new Yorkie owner would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking of getting a baby gate and shut off a long hallway for her to play in while we have to run errands and leave her some toys and water out. Most the time I'll be home though so that is a good thing. Also I'm worried my boys are 3 and 8 I know they are very excited to have our new puppy home with us but I have told them that we need to let her rest and not over stimulate her, how often should I let her go into her crate to rest I just don't want to overly excite our new puppy or wear her out too quickly. I would appreciate any advice:)

Just a suggestion....Why not start a new thread and ask some of your questions, and I'm sure you'll gets lots more responses....This place is the verrrrrrry best place to learn all about your new baby...And welcome to YT!!!!

Maddie is 2 and she has full run of the house while I am at work. I leave a t.v. on for her, she has her morning feeding, bathroom break before I leave, and I always leave a full water bowl. However, she was isolated a while before we reached this point. I have came home on several occasions for lunch and find her snuggled in the bed! Surprised to see me back so soon, and almost eager to get back to napping when I leave.:rolleyes:

My newest furbaby is in her crate while I am gone. She has a blanket and a few toys. She does fine with this and I am gone for 8hrs. I don't like it, but have no choice:(
