Crate Training Help...please! Ok, I have two yorkies now and one is 4 months and one is 3 1/2 months. Well I decided that I definitely need to try crate training them. I seriously feel like Im picking up poop all day! I started crating the older one (Roxy) but then I stopped. :( Im just a little confused on how the crate training works. Should I feed them then put them in the crate? Or do I feed them, wait a while and put them on the pee pee pad and if they dont go then put them in the crate? If someone can simplify this for me it would be great. How do you incorporate crate training with their feeding schedules? |
Here's a few links that explain the crate training process :D http://www.ddfl.org/behavior/cratetraining.htm http://www.inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html http://www.perfectpaws.com/crt.html Good luck :) |
Crate training Hi, I have 1 yorkie and my yorkie use to be crated train well we were crate training her now we just newspaper train her shes trained to go on the newspaper in the morning and night but not in the afternoon when I get home so your awnse should be when you feed them and they fisnish get the wee-wee pad and leave them there or newspaper!Dogs usally go on newspaper becuase of the ink smell but with the wee-wee pad take them there and if they ever do it there dont throw away the wee-wee pad leave it there so next time they small the pee and they go there again! :) :animal-sm |
Thanks for the advice!! I really hope it works out for them and for me!! We recently moved into a new place and the carpet is brown so we always have to look out for the surprises! I look forward to the day it is under control!! :D |
I have been told that the crate needs to be big enough just for them to be able to turn around in. I had no luck with the crate training when I first brought Misti home. She pee'd and pooed in it while I was gone which made me very upset to walk in the door and have to clean her and the crate. MOST dogs won't do their business in the crate cause they consider it their den, but I guess Misti was one of the few that didn't give a crap litterally. I hope you have better luck than I did. Good luck!!!!! |
Not sure how big my crate is but, it's at petsmart and it has a yorkie on the box. It's small but just big enough. If it's too big for them they will make a side to sleep and another to do their business, which defeats the the whole purpose of crate training. My dog Kelsey has been doing wonderfully. She stays in her crate when im gone..at work or running errands... I immediatly let her out to go to the bathroom either outside or on her puppy pads and she'll release herself. Every now and then she'll make a mistake on the carpet if she's a little lazy and i punish her and put her on the puppy pad or outside to let her know that's where she's supossed to go. She has the hang of it though..yorkies are very smart dogs, your yorkies will catch on soon! |
