luxating patella 2nd opinion As some of you may know, Zoe was diagnosed with luxating patella yesterday and was basically told that there is only one option...surgery. I went to my vet today and he told me that we should not rush to surgery. Since the limping started saturday (2 days ago) he wants to give it 7 days of severe rest to see how the knee is doing. After that then decide if surgery is the way to go. Keep in mind that my baby is 8 months old and just got neutered. I will be consulting a orthopedist on the 16th and hear what he has to say. I'm also demanding the pet store which my boyfriend bought him from to pay for the surgery if needed. I know we shouldn't buy from pet stores but Zoe was a surprise but I since I have him, I LOVE him with all my heart. The store agreed only if I use a certain veterinarian which coincidentally is the one I brought Zoe to on sunday. What do you guys think? IF Zoe heals should I bypass the surgery? |
hmmm, I think you should let your Vet know what the store told you. There is NO reason to use their Vet and not yours. If Zoe needs it, your Vet will let you know, But maybe you should get it in writing form the store now that they said they will pay the bill. It's always a good idea to keep paper work ready, just in case. Best of luck to you!:2hearts2: :2hearts2: :2hearts2: |
There are diff. degrees of LP. I had a schnauzer growing up that started limping (skipping) at around 1 year of age. She never had surgery and lived to be 13 years old. We had to put her down due to old age. Never once did the LP affect her so much that the surgery was even an option that the vet would give us. It really is a case to case decision and if it was me I would get a 2nd opinion before putting her in surgery. Of course if the 2nd vet finds the same thing I would for sure go with the first since the pet store would cover it!! |
Good luck! I know everything will work out! |
Yorkies and other small breeds are prone to LP. There are different levels....the lower the better. If they are born with it (Level I) there may never be a problem. If it is caused by an accident (jumping, etc.) then it is an immediate problem. They are just so little and jump and run like crazy. I, myself, wouldn't jump right into another surgery since he has just been trough one. I'd confine him for a few days and see how it goes (don't feel cruel, you would be doing this if he did have surgery. Also, how bad is the limp? Does he cry out? That would by unbearable...and surgery would probably be a necessity....but only after making sure going under 2 times so soon wouldn't hurt him. PLEASE let us know how your little guy is getting along. I hope your vet can give you some awsome news after a few days! |
