Potty Training: Peepad, Papers, outside? Did you train your yorkies to go pee and poop on pee pad, papers, or outside? I am just curious. I definitely want Haruka to be able to do her things on pee pad because it gets really cold in the winter here... that I might not want to take her in snow storm.. like I have to do that for Guinness. |
lexi only goes on wee pads..i walk her, but she waits till she gets home to do her business... i wish she would go outside |
Our Bailey is making great progress, and she only goes outdoors. (Okay, she only goes outdoors except when she goes indoors - but I think you all know what I mean). I originally wanted to train her to pads, but two things got in the way - my wife's preference for training her to go outside and the fact that she totally ignored the pee pads. My concern is the same as Michido's - what are we going to do when the weather is really nasty? Snow is infrequent here, but ice, cold weather and thunderstorms aren't. Is it possible to train her to go outside and have an inside option (pee pads) as a backup in bad weather? |
Jazzie goes on a pee-pee pad too. I chose the pad because we both have full time jobs and live in a condo with no yard. She took to it great once I figured out how to get her to acutally pee on it. In the beginning it was so cute cuz she would put her front paws on the pad and pee. I couldn't correct her because she had the right idea. So I got a kitty litter pan with low sides and put the pad in there. It forced her to jump in to do her business! If the pad moved and the urine goes under the pad, it's a simple clean-up and prevents floor damage. Only problem is she does not like to pee & poop in the same place! So I have two. One for pee & one for poo! |
pee pads My yorkie goes on pee pads when it is raining outside, when we are gone, or in the middle of the night. He does ask to go outside most of the time, but if he sees its raining he won't go outside. So I had to have an option. I also don't like getting up in the middle of the night or at 4 am to let him outside, and neither does my husband, so we had to come up with something. Sometimes, though he just uses the pad even though we are home and it is nice outside. I don't know if its because he just can't get our attention or he is getting to used to going inside on the pads. |
Mine mostly go outside!!!!!! Even in the snow and cold! In fact, Luigi and Brasco LOVED the snow, and I had a hard time getting them to come inside! LOLOL! But all 3 of mine do go outside! But when we are not home, we leave potty pads down, and when I come home, they have been used many times! Yayay! And in the middle of the night, they get up to do their thing on the potty pads too! Yayay! So you do what you feel comfortable with!!!!!! Do potty pads or outside....OR BOTH!!!!!!!! Which I think is great!!! Good Luck! |
I feel more comfortable doing both. I would be afraid to not put a pad down when we leave now though. I think he would mess in the house if I didnt |

Pixie mainly uses her potty pad at home, but she'll go outside too. We pretty much had to pad train her. We got her right before winter, and Wisconsin winters can be down right terrible. There was no way I was going to make my 5 month old, 1.5 lb pup go outside! Hubby and I are gone at work all day and I hate getting up late at night or really early in the morning, so the pads just make it more convienent for us. We don't have to worry about getting home to let the dog out or get up early on the weekends to let her out (I sleep 'til 9 or 10 on the weekends!) I'm able to tell when she needs to go (she doesn't actually tell us though), so when we're at a friend's or family's house we'll take her outside. That way I don't have to drag pads around with me... Plus some of my family thinks it's just gross and weird that I let her go inside and I'd rather not deal with any comments... So outside we go! |
My puppys use pee pads. I found it effective to give her a treat after she peed on her paper. We are still having troublr with her pooping on her paper thouh:( |
I started on pee pads with Bailey and then worked him outside. I am doing the same with Morgan. |
we use only pee pads because i just cant stand the fact of Bo going on the grass...i know thats stupid but i am very protective of him...and besides that my hubby drives a truck and me and Bo go with him and it is hard enough for him to have to stop for us to potty there would be no way to train him in the truck having to stop so much for a puppy they go alot.....so the pads worked great for us at home and in the truck and i carry his bag with me where ever we go and we have pads and if he needs to go i just take him to a place where he feels comfy and put his pad down and he uses it right away....he is 5 months and he has been trained since we brought him home at 8 weeks with very few accidents so i have been very lucky with that.....the first time he peed when we brought him home was on his pad and i gave him a treat and acted like he done something REALLY REALLY good (which he did lol) and ever since then no probs he loves to pee so he can get a treat lol...but over al i think it is just what ever works and is best for you. it is different for everyone. |
I am having trouble with colby and sadee both. colby used the pee pads really good until he figured out that he could lift his leg and that went down hill and now i cant get him to tell me when he needs to go. and i just got sadee about 3 months ago and she wont use the pads because colby wont use them so i have no idea what to do? i could use some help. |
When we 1st got Teddy and Tiffanie I used the puppy pads by the door on the carpet and that to me was a big mistake, I mean they went on the puppy pad when we 1st started training them, but they soaked the back of the puppy pads so bad that it went through on the carpet and silly me didn't even notice it until later for when we took up the used puppy pad we put a new on right back down. So I being a new mommy to my babies I had no idea this would happen and still today we have the pee spots there in front of the door, I've tried everything to get it up but can't...(I'm gonna post this and see if I can get any thoughts on how to get them up!) anyways now they are outside trianed oh sure they have accidents if we don't take them out but mine are really good I take them out about every 3 to 4 hours and they won't have an accident...But if I get busy say fixing supper then okay Lee there U go, U now have another mess to clean up! LOL! For my 4 babies (New puppies) I'm paper training them inside their big crate and use the puppy pads if we get them out to play...I have to say they are doing good...I've been watching them and when I say "Hey babies Mommy is here" if I wait a few minutes before getting them out of the crate then they pee on the newspaper before getting coming out to play...I'm also gonna let them go out with Tiffanie and Teddy when they get a little older. But I'll have to take the puppies out more often then their parents. Hugs, Lee |
getting pee stains out of carpet Have you tried Urine-Off to get the stains out of the carpet. I hear that is supposed to work really well. |
