Some advice please. I need to know how you keep a harness or collar on a very long thick haired dog. Sophie doesn't have to have a collar or leash at home even outside but I love to take her to the park and she tangles so bad. Her harness is a little loose and I always put her collar on loose. Do you think it would help if it was tighter? Her hair is so thick I have consider shaving a little under her neck so she could wear a collar. I don't think you would even be able to tell. As far as the harness I don't know what to do. I know a lot of people don't like collars so I have tried to stay away from them but Sophie is not a puller and sometimes I just want her to wear them because they are so cute. She has so much stuff that she can't even use because of her hair. I have been considering cutting it but I just can't seem to do it. This whole hair thing is driving me nuts. HELP! |
OH NO PLEASE DON'T CUT SOPHIES HAIR!!!!!! she is just too gorgeous! and her hair is beautiful!!!! I'm not really sure what advice to give but 1 of my little girls had long thick hair. I use to put her harness on top of her t-shirt. I hope someone can offer some good advice :) |
This is just a guess, but I would think a tighter harness that doesn't move around would be less likely to cause tangles. |
Have you considered the step in ones Chattiesmom makes from silk? I wonder if that would work better for you? I was having a hard time with Tink's hair too and I gave in and cut about 5 inches off the length. Under the arms and around the neck still do matt though but it is easier for me to get her harness on and off with out so much hair mass everywhere. |
First, don't even consider a collar for a Yorkie. Their trachea might not be strong enough for them. I personally think harnesses are the best and the step-in ones do work well. I have had puppies so small when they were being leash trained that I had to buy soft leather lizard harnesses. They are like step-in harnesses. Try the satin one mentioned earlier would be my suggestion.. |
I also heard that the silk harnesses don't tangle or mat a dog hair like the regular ones. I would give it a try if I were you. |
Thanks everyone. I will look into the silk step in harness. :aimeeyork :) |
Where would you find the silk step in harness? At a petstore? |

My dogs wear collars just for their tags and whenever we are out somewhere where they need their leashes they have their harnesses. |
