Considering a Yorkie, Concerned about current pet. First of all I'd like to say Hi to everyone. I just joined today and this is my first post. I'm thinking of getting a Yorkie, I've always wanted one and my current situation allows me lots of time to care for one. I already have a cat, O'Malley, he's a year old and is my baby. I'm worried if I get an inside puppy he will be jealous and won't want let me have anything to do with him. I think I could balance him and a new baby. Has anyone had a similar issue? Please let me know. I'm sure O'Malley would be fine after a while, I was just wondering about the adjustment period and he is a cat so he may get angry with the new baby and scratch him. Any advice will be appreciated. :animal36 |
Several members here have cats along with their yorkies. I don't have cats so i can't offer a point of view but I do know cats tend to lean towards the jelous side.:animal36 |
I have two cats. At first they were a little jealous but then they turned around and became even more friendly and they will even play with the puppies which is hard for them at times since the puppies or so full of energy and don't know when to stop. I have always had cats and dogs at the same time and have had no problems with them. Just let your cat know that you will still love him the same and spend the same amount of time with him. I don't think you should worry about it.:) :) |
I got Jazzie when my cat Magnum was about 10 years old. He was curious but didn't take to Jazzie right away. He became very clingy with me (which I was happy about). Once he got accustomed (or resigned) to having Jazzie around, he made a game of frustrating her. He started to act like a kitten again and do the whole stalk and pounce then he would jump up to where Jazzie couldn't get to. They had a good time. With you kitty being so young, I think it will work out just fine. It's just a matter of time before they are buddies. Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Looking forward to seeing a lot of posts from you and I hope to see you choose to get a baby of the canine persuasion! |
Your yorkie will do just fine with your cat. I have two yorkies and a cat. My cat was older when I got them so she doesnt have anything to do wth them but they cohabtitat just fine. |
I have 2 siamese cats and 2 yorkies. They are not friends but they live in the same house together just fine. My cats do not have any claws therefore they cannot scratch my furbabies. I will say that my yorkies rule the cats. |
I also have a cat and my yorkie loves to play with her. They chase eachother around the dining room table. (it's fun to watch) Just introduce eachother when you first bring your yorkie into your home. If you are scared of your cat scratching your pup, have the cat declawed. But I'm sure, if you give both pets equal amount of attention, they will both grow to be great pals. :D |
