Okay...I'm convinced he's barking at ghosts! Topher is a strange little one when it comes to barking at things....he barks very little, thank heavens, but sometimes when he does bark, I'm convinced he sees things that I don't!! Things he barks at that I understand (but it took me a while  ): a strange item on the ottoman/coffeetable used to upset him..lol...he's over that now, thank heavens. the suitcase on the bedroom floor...he doesn't like the suitcase for some reason and he won't relax until I move it to another room. people at the door...he barks a couple of times, then stops Those are the ones I now understand....BUT... when all is quiet in the house at night, and I'm in the livingroom on the computer, in the dark, he'll stare at one side of the room and bark. I've picked him up and brought him over to the area he's barking at and he gets so upset...it's like he's afraid. I can't for the life of me figure out what he sees...it's freaked me out a couple of times...especially since my son said that perhaps he's seeing something we don't..lol...now I'm not so sure! I was thinking it might be shadows, but it's just he and I alone in the dark room, so that's ruled out. Oh...this is hilarious...one time a couple of weeks ago, my 16 year old daughter was sitting at the ottoman, on the floor, reading a magazine. She had her legs folded underneath her bum. Topher was barking and barking at her and we couldn't figure out what he was upset at...it took me the longest time to figure out that he couldn't see her legs!! He stopped barking as soon as we showed him that she still had them..lol... Anyway....does your yorkie bark at things you can't see?? Or is this just a Topher thing? |
things like that have happened here a few times too. sometimes I do think they are seeing ghost too. LOL just talk to them and if they answer back .......... hold on to the cute yorkies. |
Well yes and no.....although sometimes it is something we can SEE if you look long enough....anything out of place...a ball in the yard, someone wearing a hat that usually doesn't....BUGS IN THE HOUSE...that takes quite a bit of looking. So far this week, I have found 1 spider and a misquito looking thing. Ramsey is a great defender against bugs. I have found she isn't really "barking at nothing"...I just have to look closely. ;) |

I am kidding..... Although as a child when scared....I would've considered handing my little brother over to the boogeyman. ;) |
I Believe! I do believe that they see spirits. My baby Bentley use to bark and bark at the corner of the room and he'd get so upset...I am convinced that he could see my dad who recently passed away....now daddy is taking care of Bentley until we meet again. My brother & his wife have a maltese who does the same thing...they are convinced of the same thing I am. |
Ooooh, that's creepy, but I do believe that they can see things we can't! But don't worry, I am sure Topher has it under control!! :p |
Frodo's begun doing a weird growling thing at night... sometimes, in the middle of the night, he'll move to the edge of my bed and look at a corner and begin growling. No clue why, I've tried and tried to figure it out but there's no window over there and nothing really to see. I just figured he's making sure I'm protected! |

If Ramsey is barking at either of my parents...that's ok...and personally I wanna see them too. :) |
This is so bizarre!! I was just talking to my co-worker about my Sebastian seeing things. He gets right at the end of my bed and bark or growl at nothing!! He doesn't do it all the time but when he does do it, it freaks the crap out of me. I have tried to look very hard to see if it may be something small like a bug or something. If it is a spirit, I hope it's a friendly one like my grandmother or my uncle. But one thing I have noticed that he does not like is when the computer is on and the screensaver pops up. My screensaver has different pictures that switch back and forth. He goes mad when my screensaver comes on!! I don't understand it. |
I beleive they see things we don't. Mine do it too. Although I've seen movement out of the corner of my eye many times since we bought this house a year ago. My dogs growl and bark at it (whatever it may be) and come close to me usually putting a paw on my leg to make sure I know they are protecting me. Once I had goosebumps for no reason and a cold chill go up my spine then the dogs started growling and barking at something. I'm convinced my house is haunted! I'm glad I have so many babies to protect me!:aimeeyork |
It has always scared me too! I could write a book. |
Well, it sounds like I'm not alone in this!! How I wish I could see what Topher sees...I'd probably bark, too! lol |
Maybe it's not what they are seeing but instead what they are hearing. Is it possible they are hearing something outside or in the walls (don't want to freak anyone out but like mice)? Especially if they growl or bark at night facing a wall or corner. I would think their hearing is much more keen then their eyesight. |
all my dogs do that too. Holly in the middle of the night will just jump up and start barking and runs into the hallway. I believe they see ghosts. Animals have a sixth sense and since their senses are so keen I think they feel a present of something. Im glad Im not the only one whole thinks that now:) |
Yes, there have been times that my little Raisin would bark at something by the stairs, always thought maybe it was Shaddow whom passed away. Now Raisin and Shaddow are gone, and Dennis sometimes barks and stares at that same spot! Does make you wonder. I have always felt that animals can feel or sense things that we cannot. When I was a kid I was playing with a Ouiji Board in my upstairs bedroom with a friend. My cat frantically cried, pushing his feet under the closed door and behaved in a manner that suggested he was quite frantic! I decided to let him in just to see what he would do, and whenever we put our hand on the board to play he would grab our shirtsleeves and pull us away. He also appeared to see things, in the same way that all my little yorkies have by my stairs. |
Ok, this is edited...... what I meant to say is I have not shared the experience, but I believe. |
What I find really strange is that when Topher barks at night in the livingroom, he's always looking at the same spot...so I don't think it's a bug. My son seems to think that Topher sees my father in law who's passed...I don't know why, but that's his theory. I guess we'll never know............... |
sometimes we sleep over at a friends house who channels the dead as a hobby. it seems there are alot of spirits hanging around her. her dogs and mine are always barking at ghosts. when she is channeling they bark at the ghost at the same time. |
maybe they're barking at termites in the walls. or roaches. ew. |
OMG-Oliver does the same thing......We'll be just sitting there watching tv or something, and all of a sudden he'll start barking into the air, but not at the direction of anything. We always laugh and say that he must be barking at a ghost. And, it's hard to break his concentration, too. He's not really a barker, thank goodness, unless the doorbell rings, or he sees a cat outside or something like that. But he's doing the ghost barking, he's so intent on whatever it is he's fixed on, that he doesn't hear you call, he doesn't see you walk by, NOTHING. You literally have to go over and touch him to get his attention away from it. Pretty creepy, lol. :aimeeyork |
ha ha ha how funny Tila does this too it ALWAYS happens at my grandma's house, we're all sitting on the couch watching t.v. she's sitting on my lap then she barks at the kitchen like something's there I go in there and look around and stuff and nothing. she always barks at nothing no matter how much i search! I'm certain she see's ghosts |
Possible Ghosts too. I got my Yorkie, Posey about a year ago and he's been fine with barking and growling only when someone comes to the front door. About 3 months ago I heard something bang my front screen door and nothing was outside and my 3 year old son told me he was scared. My brother later told me that while I was away on vacation his door slammed shut on its own. After these two incidences my dog Posey began starring down the hallway at night and barking. We ignored it, assuming he was barking at noises. Recently I woke up to him whimpering in the living room by himself while we were all in our rooms asleep. He's normally by my wife's side at all times when she sleeps. The barking has happened randomly on different nights and we assumed it might be a ghost. Last night I woke up to him growling and barking. I tried to ignore him, but he continued to growl and hide under my bed, where he normally hides if I get upset with him. I got up and checked my kids rooms and he follows me to look and stares at empty spots in the room. I thought I'd come online today to see if any other dog owners shared similar stories and I was hoping it was maybe a mouse or worse case a rat that is scaring him. Either way, it scares the crap out of me and makes me lose sleep. :aimeeyork:eek: |

@P.I.F you're not the only one my bully Roxie barks at our stairs when everyone is downstairs or I'm the only one home. She'll even go as far as growl/bark and run up the stairs to check things out. And this is coming from a dog who has never met a stranger! We've had doors open/close, lights flash like someone's taken a picture, someone call out "mommy" but my son would be asleep...just weird. My Yorkie hasn't done anything like that as of yet but I wouldn't be surprised if certain places on base are haunted. |
On weekends when I go to bed late, I play with the pups. Suddenly they'll both stop, look upstairs and turn their head as if they're looking at someone walking across the upstairs hallway. -_-; It really freaks me out every time they do this because their heads always turns in the direction of my room. They stare for a bit longer and then just resumes to play. I get more scared b/c it's usually when it's just the 3 of us and totally bad timing b/c there's some horror movie on tv. |
I have witnessed this recently two weeks ago the day my father in law passed away. There is no doubt in my mind after this incident. |

Besides the general superiority of all their senses, our Yorkies are basically little Scent Hounds. Their noses are always twitching back and forth, accessing the olfactory picture of their environment. I've grown to put a great deal of faith in their assessments. |
Is always at the same time? My dog used to do it and it turned out to be a mouse in next room" |
